CANYON, Texas (Volleyball) – The 2014 season brought numerous success stories for Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Despite falling in straight sets to No. 5 Tarleton State (21-7) on Thursday evening at the West Texas A&M University Fieldhouse, the Javelinas (18-13) concluded the season with 18 wins, the most since 1998. Six players earned All-Lone Star Conference honors and seniors
Kelsey Washington and
Stephanie Johns capped off historic careers ranked in the top five all-time in kills, blocks, digs, sets played and points.
Tarleton State cruised to a 25-16 victory in the opening set and looked to take a commanding 2-0 lead after jumping to a 22-17 lead in set No. 2. However, the resilient Javelinas continued to battle and rallied to tie the second set at 24-all before the TexAnns scored two unanswered points to take the second set, 27-25.
Trading points back and forth, TSU held a 15-12 lead and after a Kingsville timeout, the Hogs stormed out to an 8-3 run to overtake the TexAnns and lead 20-18. Trailing 23-22, the Blue and Gold tied the set at 23 before Tarleton State clinched its ticket to the LSC semifinals with a 25-23 win.
All-LSC Second Team honorees
Ashley Bukowski and
Krystal Faison each recorded nine kills and Co-LSC Setter of the Year
Casey Klobedans finished with 30 assists. Johns and Faison registered four kills apiece in the set.
Klobedans' 10.18 assists/set are fourth most in single season history and
Brett Zaccardo's 4.78 digs/set rank the freshman libero No. 5 on the all-time single season list. The six postseason honors are the most of any TAMUK volleyball team since 2009.
TSU will advance to take on top-seeded and No. 21 West Texas A&M or No. 8 A&M-Commerce tomorrow.
