Javelins Split Two Matches In First Day Of Tourney In Bolivar

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team made it five wins in a row to open the 2012 campaign Friday with a 3-0 victory over Harding (Ark.), however the run ended in their second match of the day as they dropped a 3-0 decision 7th-ranked Washburn (Kan.) on the opening day of the 2012 Bear  Clash hosted by Southwest Baptist..
In the opening match, sophomore Sarah Fountain used 34 assists to guide the Javelinas past Harding 25-21, 25-23, and 28-26 in a tight-set match. Dedra Brown and Kelsey Washington tied for the team-high with 10 kills as Kingsville swept its fourth opponent in five wins. The Javs hit .255 in the match limiting Harding to .171 and did not hit below .200 in any set.
Defensively, the Javs placed three players in double digit digs. Libero Ali Insell and defensive specialist Kalinda Graves led the team 11 digs apiece. Fountain displayed her all-around ability with 10 digs. At the net, the defense combined for a season-high six blocks. Bethany Friesenhahn had team-best 2.5 blocks in the win.
In the second-game, nationally ranked Washburn ended the Javelinas unbeaten run 25-10, 25-16, and 25-19. Due to a freak storm, the facility on Bolivar lost power for over 30 minutes. Complete stats were not available.
The 5-game winning streak to start the season. It is the second longest streak to open a season in Kingsville history. The 2009 team claimed six victories to start the season.
