Washington Leads Javelinas To Sweep Of ACU

ABILENE, Texas – Coming into the 2012 season, the Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team had dropped its last seven matches to Abilene Christian. With a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 31-29) sweep of the Wildcats on Friday night the Javelinas swept the season series.
With the win, Kingsville moves to 13-10 overall and 6-9 in the Lone Star Conference climbing into sixth in the Lone Star Conference. ACU is now 9-16 overall and falls to 5-10 in the LSC.
Kelsey Washington led the way for the Javelinas finishing as the lone Kingsville player with double digit kills with 17. She had a double-double and hit .389 in the match.
In the opening set, the Javelinas took the lead at 2-1 and never trailed again. Leading 19-18, Kingsville pulled away with a 6-3 run. Four different players had kills as the team won 25-21.
The second set was tied early at five when Washington sparked a 5-0 run with three kills. ACU would pull to within 15-13 but Kingsville went on a 5-2 win to seal the win. Stephanie Johns, Kelsee Felux, and Washington all had kills in the decisive run.
The final set was tight throughout with the largest lead three points on two occasions by the Wildcats. The Hoggies fought off set points five times before a Dedra Brown kill ended the match.
Kalinda Graves had a team-high 18 kills, while Friesenhahn had 12 and Washington 10. Sarah Fountain finished with 30 assists.
On Tuesday night, the Javelinas host St. Mary’s in a non-conference tilt at 7 p.m. to start a three-game home stand.
Prior to the game, the Javelinas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee along with Whataburger will be hosting a Trunk or Treat at 6 p.m. in the parking lot to the East of the SPEC. The game is also the Dig Pink match sponsored by Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg. All fans in a costume or wearing pink will be admitted free.
