Javs Suffer Five Set Loss

CANYON, TEXAS – For the second time in a week, the Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team suffered a five set loss to a Lone Star Conference opponent on Friday night against Eastern New Mexico. The Zias (2-5, 1-1) topped the Javelinas (1-2, 0-2) 25-18, 24-26, 22-25, 15-11. (box score)

The match was a defensive struggle for both teams as neither was able to get much going on the attack. The Javelinas had a negative attack percentage in two of the five sets while the Zias also had a negative attack percentage in one set. Neither team even reached a .200 attack percentage in any set.

The Javelinas finished the match with 50 kills, but also had 42 attack errors. Freshman Kelsey Washington (Cuero/Cuero HS) led the team with 16 kills while Laura Macek (Wilson, KS/Ellsworth HS) added 10 kills and a team high .316 attack percentage. Lauryn Lozano (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) added her second double-double of the season with 10 kills, 15 digs and four blocks. Sondra Cui (Schertz/Steele HS) led the team with a career high 38 assists and 11 digs while Ali Insell (The Woodlands/The Woodlands HS) led the team with 26 digs. Stephanie Johns (Lubbock/Coronado HS) had a team high five blocks.

The Zias had 53 kills in the match and a .090 attack percentage. Kristen Beck and Jessica King each had 13 kills in the match and Beck added 19 digs. Dallas Russell led the team with 22 digs. Kennedi Catano led the team with 45 assists and 12 digs. Evelyn Escobar added five blocks for the team.

The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. against New Mexico Highlands and 7 p.m. against West Texas A&M.
