Javelinas Defeat Lobos

KINGSVILLE---Texas A&M-Kingsville had five players score in double figures as the Javelinas defeated the Sul Ross State Lobos, 88-74, here Sunday afternoon in the Steinke Physical Education Center.

It marked the renewal of a rivalry that goes back to the 1920s. The programs were cohorts in the Lone Star Conference in 1959-75.

Sunday’s game was the 67th between the teams and the first since 1976-77.

The Lobos had their only lead at 7-6 three minutes deep in the game and from there the Javelinas spurted to a 10-point edge (25-15) midway in the opening period.

The hosts were up by as many as 20 in the first half and were in front, 43-25, at the break.

Sul Ross was able to pull within nine twice in the second period, the last at 59-50 with 10:53 remaining. At that stage, the Javelinas scored five in a row and held a double-digit lead the remainder of the game.

Guard Ryan Layssard led the Javelina scoring with 17 points. He was six of nine from the field and hit five of seven free throws.

Center Robert Williams had 14 for the Javelinas, guard Ashton Brown scored 13 and forwards Reid Wallace and Marcus Ford each had 10.

Ford led the Javelina rebounding with six.

Center Colton Thompson was the leading scorer for the Lobos with 17 points.

The Javelinas will continue their current home streak Tuesday night when they host St. Edward’s, which owns one of the victories over the Javelinas this season.
