
DENTON, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team fell to 1-6 in Lone Star Conference five-set matches on Thursday with a 25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 22-25, 15-7 loss at Texas Woman’s.
The Javelinas fell to 13-13 on the season and only 5-12 in conference play. It was their second five-set loss to the Pioneers (11-15, 9-8) this year. It was the first time this year that the team forced a fifth set after losing the first two sets.
The Javelinas were able to force a fifth set thanks to the trio of Lauryn Lozano (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS), Kelsey Washington (Cuero/Cuero HS) and Lakeshia Craft (Pflugerville/Connally HS). Lozano had 11 kills and a .434 attack percentage, Washington added a team high seven kills in the fourth set and Craft contributed eight kills and a .583 attack percentage in the two sets. The Hoggie attack was at its best in the fourth set when they racked up 19 kills and a .421 attack percentage.
The Javelinas finished with 68 kills, nine more than the Pioneers, 71 digs, 6.0 team blocks and a .208 attack percentage. Washington led the team with 17 kills while adding four blocks and three digs. Lozano had 16 kills, six digs and a .268 attack percentage. Craft finished with 11 kills and a .280 attack percentage. Laura Macek (Wilson, KS/Ellsworth HS) contributed 11 kills, three blocks and a .417 attack percentage.
Sondra Cui (Schertz/Steele HS) and Giselle Carreon (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) directed the Javelina attack while Bethany Friesenhahn (Poth/Poth HS) and Ali Insell (The Woodlands/The Woodlands HS) were the defensive leaders. Cui led the team with 38 assists and eight digs while Carreon had a double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs. Friesenhahn added 17 digs and Insell had 16 digs.
The Pioneers had 59 kills, 68 digs, 7.0 team blocks and a .244 attack percentage. Viktorija Jablonska led the attack with 22 kills and a .528 attack percentage. Erin Harman posted a double-double with 14 kills, 13 digs , three blocks and a .268 attack percentage while Chloe’ Tate added 14 kills and three blocks. Morgan Wilson led the defense with 16 digs while Kayla Rivero and Hannah Marshall each had 29 assists apiece.
The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at LSC rival A&M-Commerce at 1 p.m.
