
LAWTON, OKLAHOMA – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team outplayed Lone Star Conference rival Cameron University in nearly every aspect of the game on Tuesday night, but they were unable to stop Kelle Carver who pounded out 24 kills for the Aggies including their final five points of the match. The Aggies (12-10, 6-8) won the match 25-21, 20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 17-15.
The final set was a wild one as the lead change hands a few times. First, the Aggies jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but then the Javelinas (12-11, 5-10) scored the next six points of the game as Stephanie Johns (Lubbock/Coronado HS) and Bethany Friesenhahn (Poth/Poth HS) each had a pair of kills in the run. The Javs had two chances to win the match when they took a 14-12 lead, but Carver put away two straight kills to tie the match. The Javs reclaimed the lead at 15-14 and had a third chance to win, but Carver stepped up and hit three straight kills for the Aggies.
In the team totals, the Javelinas won nearly every statistic. They had 10 more kills, 17 more digs, three more blocks had a .252 attack percentage versus only .186 for the Aggies. Cameron had more service aces and fewer service errors.
The Javelinas were led by the trio of Lauryn Lozano (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS), Lakeshia Craft (Pflugerville/Connally HS) and Kelsey Washington (Cuero/Cuero HS) on offense. Lozano tied a season high with 19 kills and a .293 attack percentage. Craft had 13 kills, four blocks and a .286 attack percentage. Washington also had 13 kills and a .269 attack percentage. Johns and Friesenhahn combined for 15 kills and nine blocks while Laura Macek (Wilson, KS/Ellsworth HS) added six kills and three blocks.
The Javelina setters both had strong performances. Sondra Cui (Schertz/Steele HS) had 31 assists and eight digs while Giselle Carreon (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) had 20 assists and 14 digs. Libero Ali Insell (The Woodlands/The Woodlands HS) led the team with 15 digs and Friesenhahn had 14.
Carver led an unbalanced Aggie attack that had only one other player with more than six kills. Carver finished with 24 kills, three blocks and a .367 attack percentage. Adrienne Lawson added 11 kills and 10 digs. Setter Jenna Risoli had 37 assists and 10 digs while Julisa Ocasio led all players with 20 digs.
The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at Midwestern State at 2 p.m.
