Lady Buffs Sweep Javelinas

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team was unable to pull off an upset on Saturday afternoon against #14 West Texas A&M. The Lady Buffs won the match 25-16, 25-22, 25-18 at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

The Javelinas (11-10, 5-9) threatened the Lady Buffs (21-2, 12-1) in the second set. The two teams were tied at 19 apiece before West Texas was able to pull out the set and use the momentum to jump out to a big lead in the third set before the Hoggies narrowed the gap late in the match.

The Javelinas had 37 kills and 48 digs while posting a .111 attack percentage in the match. Freshman Kelsey Washington (Cuero/Cuero HS) led the team with 10 kills while Laura Macek (Wilson, KS/Ellsworth HS) added three kills, three blocks and a .600 attack percentage. Sondra Cui (Schertz/Steele HS) dished out 19 assists for the team and Ali Insell (The Woodlands/The Woodlands HS) led all players with 22 digs.

The Lady Buffs entered the match with the top attacking team in the Lone Star Conference and they did not falter against the Hoggies. They had 40 kills, a .307 attack percentage, 49 digs and 9.0 team blocks. Four different players had at least seven kills in the match. Stormi Lancaster had a team high nine kills and 13 digs. Setter Lacy Hayes had 34 assists, five blocks and four kills. Erin Dougherty led all players with six blocks while contributing seven kills and a .429 attack percentage.

The Javelinas are back in action on Tuesday night at Texas A&M-International at 7 p.m.
