Javelinas Shoot to Victory

It was the first conference victory of the season for the Javelinas (3-14, 1-4) as they turned a close game into a blowout. They shot nearly 60 percent from three-point range for the game and connected on 60 percent of all their field goals in the second half.

The game was close for the majority of the time. The two teams were tied at 29-29 heading into halftime and the score remained tied 48-48 with 9:10 left in regulation. The Javelinas buried three-pointers on consecutive possessions to take a six point lead they would never relinquish.

The Mustangs (5-12, 1-4) pulled to within 56-54 with 7:06 remaining in the game, but the Javelinas put together a 13-1 run to take control of the game. The Javelinas outscored the Mustangs 29-11 over the final seven minutes of the game.

The Javelinas made 25-of-48 field goal attempts, were 13-of-22 from three-point range and 22-of-27 from the foul line. Freshmen Novella Thomas (Corpus Christi/West Oso HS) and Chelsea Solis (San Antonio/Wagner HS) each led the team with 19 points apiece. Thomas made four three-pointers, dished out four assists and had a steal. Solis went 7-for-9 from the foul line and dished out six assists. Junior Kelly Bastow (Bunbury, Australia/Bunbury Catholic HS) added 17 points on 5-of-8 three-point attempts while picking up three steals.

The Mustangs made 35 percent of their field goals, made 1-of-8 three-point attempts and were 22-of-32 at the foul line. They pulled down 15 more rebounds than the Hoggies, but could not overcome their poor shooting. Nolisha Markham led the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Cierra Thompson added 11 points and five boards while Jazman Patterson pumped in 10 points off the bench.

The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at Tarleton State at 5 p.m.
