KINGSVILLE, TEXAS - Angelo State's Camille Perkins scored a game high 24 points in leading her team past Texas A&M-Kingsville in Lone Star Conference South Division women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court, 68-50. (box score)
The Belles (9-6, 2-1) took an early lead and only trailed for 54 seconds in the game. Perkins led all players in scoring while doing most of her damage at the foul line as she went 10-for-11 from the charity stripe.
The Javelinas (2-13, 0-3) took their only lead of the game on a jumper by Novella Thomas (Corpus Christi/West Oso HS) with 8:49 left in the first half. Her jumper capped a 9-0 run to give the Hoggies a 15-14 lead.
The Belles responded by scoring the next 11 points of the game and were never seriously threatened after that. They took a 34-23 lead into halftime and never led by fewer than nine points in the second half.
The Javelinas shot 38.9 percent from the field, made 4-of-16 from three-point range and were 4-of-10 at the foul line. Thomas led the team with a strong all-around performance that included 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Meagan Barlow (D’Hanis/D’Hanis HS) added 12 points, six rebounds and two steals. Rochelle Ikeni (Fresno, CA/Roosevelt HS) contributed seven points and eight rebounds off the bench.
The Javelinas were plagued by turnovers as they gave up the ball 25 times. The Belles had 17 steals that led directly to 26 points.
The Belles shot 37.7 percent from field, made 3-of-14 three-point attempts and were 25-for-37 at the foul line. In addition to Perkins, Lindsey Mahone scored 18 points and had six steals. Morgan Youngblood came off the bench to provide 11 points and eight boards. ASU turned the ball over 18 times, but were able to grab seven more rebounds than the Javelinas.
The Hoggies are back in action on Saturday at Abilene Christian starting at 2 p.m.
