Cards Win with Big Second Half

  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Incarnate Word women’s basketball team outscored Texas A&M-Kingsville, 28-4 over a nine minute stretch in the second half to win, 64-47 on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference South Division play at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. (box score)

The Cardinals (5-9, 1-1) were spearheaded by point guard Katy Cooke who had five points and five assists in the second half. Brittany Jackson scored 11 points in the first seven minutes of the second half to ignite the offense.

The Javelinas (2-12, 0-2) were once again plagued by turnovers as they committed eight during the nine minute run by the Cardinals. Overall, the Hoggies committed 26 turnovers that turned into 24 points for the visitors.

The first half began slowly as neither team could find the basket. The Javelinas connected on 31.6 percent of their field goals while the Cardinals made only 27.3 percent of their shots in the half. The Javelinas took 6:29 to score, but were down by just four points at the time. The game went to halftime with the Cardinals leading 22-17.

The Javelinas shot 32.7 percent from the field, made 5-of-19 three-point attempts and were 10-for-12 at the foul line. Chelsea Solis (San Antonio/Wagner HS) was the only player on the team to score in double figures with 12 while dishing out four assists. Vickie Gonzalez (Hidalgo/Hidalgo HS) led the team with nine rebounds and four blocks.

The Cardinals shot 36.4 percent from the field, made 2-of-8 three-pointers and were 14-for-21 at the foul line. They had a trio of players score in double figures with Chloe Wallace leading the team with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Ifunanya Mora added 12 points, five boards and three steals while Jackson chipped in with 13 points. Cook finished the game with eight points and six assists.

The Javelinas are back in action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Angelo State on IBC Bank “Pack the House” night.
