Big Win on Road for Javelinas

  LAWTON, OKLAHOMA – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team bounced back from a one set deficit to win the final three sets of the match at Cameron University on Thursday night at the Aggie Gym 19-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-23. (box score)

The win for the Javelinas improved their Lone Star Conference record to 2-1 and their overall record to 5-7. It was a nice win for the team because it dropped the Aggies (5-6, 2-1) from the undefeated ranks in conference play.

The first set went the way of the Aggies as they pounded out 14 kills and had a .357 attack percentage. The Hoggies had only eight kills and seven attack errors. Adrienne Lawson led Cameron with five kills in five attack attempts and recorded eight digs.

In the second set, the Javelinas dominated the Aggies. They posted a .276 attack versus a -.049 attack for Cameron. Christina Romo (Bandera/Medina Valley HS) had three kills in four chances while Lauryn Lozano (San Antonio/Smithson Valley HS) added five kills. Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) tallied 12 digs in the set to lead the defense.

In the third set, the Javelinas led 21-18 before a Cameron timeout sparked the home team to four straight points to take the lead. With the set tied at 22, Amanda Waclawczyk (Poth/Poth HS) and Jess Morris (Goliad/Goliad HS) combined for a block to take a 23-22 lead. After the Aggies tied the score the Javelinas scored the final two points on a kill by Bethany Friesenhahn (Poth/Poth HS) and a Cameron attack error.

In the fourth set, the Javelinas jumped out to a 12-4 before the Aggies scored 10 of the next 13 points in the set to make it 15-14 Kingsville. The Javelinas held onto the lead until a Cameron block made it 23-22 in favor of the home team. The Javelinas were able to pick up the win when the Aggies finished the match with three straight attack errors.

The Javelinas finished the match with 53 kills and a .196 attack. Waclawczyk finished the match with 13 kills, no attack errors and a .542 attack to go along with four blocks. Romo added nine kills without an attack error and three blocks. Casey Chancellor (Bellville/Bellville HS) added six kills, four blocks and a .294 attack.

Sondra Cui (Schertz/Steele HS) and Amanda Yeager (Brenham/Brenham HS) combined for 45 assists on the night to direct the Javelina attack.

On defense, Hernandez led the team with 22 digs while Lozano added a double-double with 11 digs and 12 kills.

The Aggies were led by Adrienne Lawson who had 14 kills, 13 digs and a .342 attack. Valerie Ogle added double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs. Jenna Risoli and Ogle combined for 39 assists overall.

The Javelinas are back in action at 2 o’clock on Saturday at LSC rival Midwestern State.
