Javelinas Start Slow, Finish Fast

  WEATHERFORD, OKLAHOMA – Despite their worst shooting performance of the season and a slow start to Saturday’s game at Southwestern Oklahoma, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team picked up victory number 12 on the season with a 64-41 win.  (box score)

The Javelinas (12-3) shot a season low 33.9 percent from the field and only led the winless Bulldogs (0-13) by one point at the half. 

In the second half, the Hoggies picked up their play on both offense and defense.  They held the Bulldogs to 14 percent shooting from the floor (4-for-28) in the second half.  The Javelinas outscored the Bulldogs, 22-4 over a 9:49 span starting at the 14:25 mark.  They went from trailing by one point to leading by 16 points.

The Javelinas then closed the game out with a 9-0 run over the final 2:12 of the game.

The Javelinas went 19-for-56 from the field, but they did knock down 40.9 percent of their three-point attempts (9-24).  They connected on 17-of-24 free throw attempts.  Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) led the team with 14 point and four rebounds.  Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) had 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals while Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Ridge HS) added 13 points.  Rochelle Ikeni (Fresno, CA/Roosevelt HS) led the team with seven rebounds.

The Javelinas forced 23 turnovers in the game while committing only 14.

The Bulldogs were led by Courtney Harper who came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 10 rebounds.  They shot 25.0 percent from the field, 23.8 percent from three-point range and were 10-for-13 at the foul line.  They out rebounded the Hoggies 41-38.

The Javelinas travel to West Texas A&M on Wednesday at 6 o’clock for their first Lone Star Conference South Division game of the year.
