Volleyball Loses Match, Clinches Playoffs

ABILENE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team lost a three set match on the road to Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian on Thursday night, but that was tempered by the news that the team clinched an LSC Playoff berth. (box score)

The Wildcats (26-5, 11-1) defeated the Javelinas (17-11, 6-6) 25-15, 25-23, 25-9.  Jordan Schilling led ACU with 10 kills, 10 digs and three aces.  Ijeoma Moronu dished out 27 assists and added 10 digs.  Shawna Hines added four blocks to lead the squad.  They had 40 kills and posted a .275 attack for the match.

The Javelinas struggled with no player having more than five kills in the match.  The team had just 22 kills and a .021 attack percentage in the match.  Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) led the team with nine digs while Kristin Chancellor (Bellville/Bellville HS) added three blocks.

Despite the loss, the Javelinas had some other results around the conference end in their favor.  The Hoggies are currently tied for fifth in the LSC with one match remaining.  There are three teams tied for the eighth and final playoff spot.  The Javelinas hold the tie-breaker over two of those teams meaning they are guaranteed a playoff berth.  This is second time in the last three years the team has reached the LSC Playoffs.  This year’s playoffs will be hosted by West Texas A&M and will begin on November 12.  The official matchups will be made available after Saturday’s matches.

The Javelinas finish their regular season with a match at Angelo State on Saturday at 2 o’clock.
