With the win the Javelinas finished their opening weekend with a 3-2 record.
Sophomore Courtney Rigamonti (Victoria St. Joseph's) evened her record at 2-2 by pitching a complete game eight-hitter. She allowed only three runs despite the Javelina defense making for errors.
Ariel Lichtenberger (Alice) singled to drive in a run in the third, but Delta State led 3-1 heading into the top of the fourth.
Shaun Bryan, who finished the three-day tournament with a team-leading .400 average, doubled to start the fourth and was driven on a single by Kristin Schumann (Corpus Christi Carroll). Ma-Lia Guerra (Falfurrias) and Jessika Cantu (Tuloso-Midway) both singled to load the bases. Schumann and Guerra then scored on an error and the fourth run came on a run-scoring single by Lichtenberger.
"It was a good start for us," said Javelina head coach Blake Miller. "The biggest thing was that from game one to game five we were a different team. We made progress every game. We are scrappy and we play hard. I can't be more proud of that. No matter what, we are going to play hard."
The Javelinas open the home season Wednesday night against Texas A&M-International.
