Women Pick up Third Straight Win

Angela Franklin had 20 in the Javs win  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team survived a late scare from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and held on for a 68-63 victory in Lone Star Conference crossover action on Thursday night at the Steinke Center. The Javelinas (3-3) played a great first half building up a 36-22 lead by halftime.  Junior Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) led the way with 13 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the floor.  The Hoggie offense shot 50 percent from the floor with nine assists and only eight turnovers.  The defense forced the Bulldogs (2-4) into 14 turnovers and limited them to 25 percent shooting from the field.

The Javelinas led by as many as 17 points on three different occasions in the second half.  Junior guard Ursula Hill’s (Cypress/Cy-Fair HS) three-pointer with 10:28 to play made the score 55-38.
From the point on the Bulldogs knocked down four three-pointers in the next five minutes and cut the lead to 61-56 on Erin Wright’s trifecta with 5:19 remaining.  The Javs would have the answer as they held the Bulldogs to just two points over the next 4:37.

The Bulldogs had one last gasp as they pulled to within three points with 17 seconds left, but Franklin calmly knocked down two free throws to seal the victory.

For the third straight game, the Javelinas shot the ball well from the foul line making 78.6 percent.  The team drilled nine three-pointers with five different players getting in on the action.  Franklin finished with 20 points to lead the squad.  Junior Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) added 11 points while Tammi Mitchell (Tyler/John Tyler HS) contributed 10 points off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting.  Hill dished off a team high five assists.

The Hogs committed a season low 15 turnovers while picking up 12 steals.  They forced 25 turnovers and scored 32 points off those turnovers.  The team was out rebounded by a 38-25 margin. 

The Bulldogs were led by Jennifer DeGarmo who made 4-of-8 three-point attempts and scored a team high 20 points while grabbing seven rebounds.  Lucy Ramon added 14 points and eight rebounds.  Jenna Sprague added 10 points and nine boards.  SWOSU went 17-of-24 from the foul line.

The Javelinas are on their first three game winning streak since opening the 2007-08 season with three straight wins.  They play host to Cameron University on Saturday at 5 o’clock.
