PORTALIS, NEW MEXICO – The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team ended its season on a high note defeating Lone Star Conference rival Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, 25-23, 26-24, 25-11. (box score)
The Javelinas (11-17, 4-9) won a tightly contested first set when junior middle blocker Kristin Chancellor (Bellville/Bellville HS) slammed home a kill. The second set was similar to the first set with the score close the whole way. With the score tied 24-24, freshman middle blocker Amanda Waclawczyk (Poth/Poth HS) connected on back-to-back swings to give the Hoggies a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, the score was tied 7-7 before the Javelinas took the match over. First, sophomore libero Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) served up six straight points and then sophomore outside hitter Sha Tramble (Houston/Clear Brook HS) served up the final nine points of the season. Fittingly, it was senior outside hitter Shaday Smith (Houston/Jones HS) who pounded out the final kill of the season to clinch the match.
Smith led the Javelinas with 13 kills and a .600 attack percentage. She finished her career with 1,326 kills, third all-time at A&M-Kingsville. Chancellor added 10 kills and a team high five blocks. Her sister, Casey, added nine kills and a .467 attack. As a team, the Javs posted a .259 attack and held the Zias (6-28, 0-13) to a .090 attack.
Jessica King led the home team with 13 kills while Caitlin Murphy led all players with 20 digs.
