Angela Franklin scores 2 of her season high 22 points on Friday night  KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – If there is something that the Texas A&M-Kingsville and University of Central Missouri women’s basketball teams can take from their game on Friday night in the Steinke Center, it’s that free throw shooting is very important. (box score)

The Javelinas (1-3) picked up their first win of the season, 80-74, in so small part because they made 37-of-40 free throw attempts during the game, an unbelievable 92.5 percent while the Jennies (2-1) went just 15-of-27 at the line.

The Javs needed every free throw as they struggled with the full court pressure defense applied by UCM.  The Jennies were able to convert 35 Kingsville turnovers into 34 points.

The Hoggies took the lead less than three minutes into the game and held a 29-23 lead with 3:35 remaining before the Jennies got rolling.  UCM closed the half on an 11-4 run to take a 34-33 lead into the break.

Early in the second half it looked like Central Missouri was taking control of the game as they built up a seven point lead.  However, Kayla Naylor (Corpus Christi/Calallen HS) capped a quick 7-0 run with a three-pointer to tie the game for the Javelinas.

The two teams traded scores over the next few minutes, but the Javs would take the lead for good on a pair of Reagan Sutton (Portland/Pusch Ridge Christian HS) with 12:36 to play.  The Javs were able to push their lead to nine points on four different occasions, but never held a double-figure lead.

The Javs nearly gave the game in the latter moments.  They led 67-62 with 3:59 remaining and proceeded to turn the ball over five straight times, but fortunately their defense limited the Jennies to just one bucket.  The Javs held a 71-64 lead with 1:30 to play after a lay-up by LaKeisha Jones (Winnsboro, La./Crowville HS) and two free throws by Ursula Hill (Cypress/Cy-Fair HS).

An old-fashioned three-point play by Kara Fleming and a three-point field goal by Brittney Slifer cut the Hoggie lead to 72-70 with 1:01 left.  The Javs would handle the pressure by making all eight free throw attempts in the final minute of play to seal the victory.

Jones and Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Vanden HS) each tallied a season high 22 points to lead the Kingsville offense.  Jones added a game high 14 rebounds and was a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line.  Franklin went 8-for-10 from the field and 6-of-7 at the line.  Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) added 15 points, six rebounds and four steals and Hill finished with 11 points, three assists and three steals.  The team shot 42.6 percent from the floor, went 3-for-15 from three-point range and out rebounded the Jennies 43-31.  Dyana Bullinger (Spring/Klein HS) had eight rebounds and four steals while Brie Smith (Victoria/Victoria Memorial HS) added four rebounds in just three minutes of action.

The Jennies were led by point guard Kara Fleming’s 20 points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals.  Rebecca Roberts and Slifer each had 11 points.  UCM shot 39.1 percent from the field and made 9-of-27 three-point attempts.  They had 20 steals as a team and committed 25 turnovers.

The Javelinas play #10 Emporia State on Saturday at 4 o’clock.  ESU defeated Texas A&M International 115-63 in the first game of Friday’s double header.  The Jennies take on TAMIU at 2 o’clock.  The Turkey Day Shootout will also feature a men’s basketball game at 7 o’clock with the Javelinas hosting Incarnate Word.  All three games will have live stats and live video available at www.javelinaathletics.com and each game that features the Javelinas will also have live audio.  Ticket prices for games will be $2 for students and $4 for adults.
