Javelinas Lose at Wayland Baptist

LaKeisha Jones  PLAINVIEW, TEXAS – Sometimes a loss happens because of a numbers of different factors, but other times it boils down to one thing.  On Saturday, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women’s basketball team lost because of the second reason at Wayland Baptist University. (box score)
The Javelinas (0-1) committed 39 turnovers in a 58-56 loss to the Flying Queens (3-0) in their regular season opener.
In the first half, the Javelinas survived 18 turnovers and built up an 8-point lead before settling for a 30-25 advantage at the half.  They held the Queens to just 27.3 percent shooting in the half while connecting on 54.5 percent of their own shots from the field.
In the second half, the two teams shot about the same percentage from the field, but the Queens attempted 13 more shots than the Javs.  The Queens took the lead early in the half, but the Javs would not give up.  Junior Angela Franklin (Vacaville, CA/Solano JC) knocked down a three-pointer with 4:45 remaining to give the Javs a 49-48 lead.  The Queens were able to go on an 8-0 run following Franklin’s triple.
Just when it looked like the Javs were done, junior guard Felicia Soza (Beeville/A.C. Jones HS) score five points in a 35 second span to make it 56-54 Wayland Baptist with 2:13 to play.  The score remained that way until Jessica Walker made two free throws for the home team with 26 seconds left.  The Javs came right back when senior LaKeisha Jones (Winnsboro, LA/Paris JC) was fouled on a put back attempt.  She made both free throws to close the gap to two points with 20 remaining.
Over the final 20 ticks on the clock the Queens went 0-4 at the free throw line, but the Javelinas turned the ball over twice and WBU took the victory.
Jones led the Javelinas with 18 points and 11 rebounds while making 8-of-11 shots from the floor.  No other Jav scored more than junior Dyana Bullinger’s (Spring/Klein HS) eight points.  A&M-Kingsville went 22-of-49 from the field, 5-of-17 from three-point range and were 7-of-11 at the line.
The Queens were led by Rose Ouma’s triple-double that included 17 points, 18 rebounds and 10 steals.  She had eight of the team’s 26 offensive rebounds.  Staci Murphree came off the bench to score 12 points while Alex Williams had 10 points, seven boards and five steals.  WBU made 27-of-84 shots from the floor and were only 1-of-17 from three-point range and 3-of-8 from the foul line.
The Javelinas are back on the road on Monday night with a game at UT-Permian Basin at 5:30.
