Volleyball Dropped by Mustangs

Kirby Krueger  WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – For the fourth straight Lone Star Conference match, the Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team went to five sets.  On Thursday night, the Javelinas lost a heart-breaker at Midwestern State University 25-19, 25-14, 21-25, 14-25, 15-13. (box score)
The Hoggies (7-13, 3-5) fell behind early in the first set, closed to within two points at 20-18, but the Mustangs (20-6, 4-2) finished off the set winning five of the last six points.
The second set was similar to the first set with the Mustangs taking the early lead.  This time, there would be no Javelina come back.  The Mustangs scored the final seven points of the set to win going away.
The match began to turn around in the third set.  It began like the first two sets with the Mustangs ahead 15-10.  However, sophomore Virginia Hernandez (Katy/Katy HS) served up five straight points to get the Javs back in the match.  The Javs continued to push the pace outscoring Midwestern 15-6 to close the set.
A&M-Kingsville used the momentum from the third set and transferred it to the fourth set.  They took an early lead and never let the Mustangs back into the set.  The Javs easily won 25-14 to set up the fifth and deciding set.
The fifth set swung back and forth.  First, the Mustangs took a 3-1 lead, but then Javelina junior Kristin Chancellor (Bellville/Bellville HS) served up three aces and five points to give the Hogs a 7-3 advantage.  The Mustangs bounced back tying the score 9-9 and then taking a two-point lead.  The match came down to the final few points.  Trailing 14-13, the Chancellor served it up again for the Javelinas, but there was no magic left as Jessica Ransom pounded out the match-winning kill for the Mustangs.
Both teams struggled on the attack.  The Javelinas finished with a .087 attack percentage while the Mustangs finished with a .109 attack.
The Javelinas had 11.0 blocks in the match with freshman Amanda Waclawczyk (Poth/Poth HS) leading the way with five blocks.  Sophomore Sha Tramble (Houston/Clear Brook HS) led the team with 13 kills and 18 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.  Chancellor finished with 12 kills and a team high .235 attack.  Junior Kirby Krueger (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) directed the offense with a season high 34 assists while Hernandez led the defense with 23 digs.
Alysha Pritt led the Mustang offense with 14 kills and a team high four blocks.  Setter Allison Schreiber was the MVP for Midwestern with 39 assists, 19 digs, six kills and a .600 attack.  Shay Velasquez led all players with 27 digs and five aces.
The Javelinas are back in action on Saturday at Cameron University at 2 o’clock.
