David Brown II

Head coach Daren Wilkinson announced the hiring of David Brown II as Texas A&M University-Kingsville defensive coordinator on Feb. 2, 2015. An extensive background in collegiate athletics, Browns joins the Javelinas after a season as the secondary and safeties coach at the University of Wyoming.

In 2015, Coach Brown II led an aggressive defense who led the Lone Star Conference in total sacks with 29 and toatal sack yards at 175. As the postion coach of the secondary, Brown II had standout players in Lamont Hills and freshman Devonte Williams. Both ended the 2015 season in the top ten of the LSC in interceptions. Hills was named to the All-LSC Second Team Defense and Williams was tabbed as honorable mention.

Prior to Wyoming, Brown coached the safeties at Fresno State University in 2013. Brown helped guide Fresno State to the Mountain West Conference Championship. The Bulldogs posted an 11-2 overall record and a 7-1 conference mark. The Bulldogs won the inaugural Mountain West Football Championship Game, by a score of 24-17 over Utah State, and earned a berth in the 2013 Las Vegas Bowl where they faced USC.

Fresno State finished the season ranked 20th in the Final 2013 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) Standings, 20th in the Harris Interactive Poll, and 27th in both the final USA Today Coaches Poll and Associated Press Poll.

At Fresno State, Brown coached First Team All-Mountain West safety Derron Smith. Smith was named to two national defensive award watch lists in 2013 -- the Bednarik Award Watch List (top defensive player of the year) and the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List (top defensive back). Smith was also a quarterfinalist for the Lott Impact Trophy Award, which takes into account a student-athlete's leadership ability, performance on the field, academic record and community service activities.

A former head coach and defensive coordinator at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo., he led Missouri S&T to a 19-14 record from 2010-12, including going a dominating 10-1 in 2012.

The 10-win 2012 campaign led to a No. 24 national ranking in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. His team's 10 wins tied for the most in school history. The Miners' No. 24 national ranking marked the first time since 1980 that they had ended a season in the national rankings. He took over a program that had a record of 4-7 the year prior to him becoming head coach. In Brown's three years at Missouri S&T, the Miners went from 3-8 in 2010, to 6-5 in 2011 to 10-1 in 2012. Brown was named the Great Lakes Football Conference Co-Coach of the Year in 2011. His 2012 Miners led the nation in turnover margin and recorded a school record 45 sacks, while ranking 12th nationally in pass efficiency defense and allowed just 18.6 points per game.

A cornerbacks coach at Ohio University before getting his first head coaching job in the college ranks, Brown spent four seasons (2006-09) under Bobcat head coach Frank Solich.

At Ohio, Brown helped lead the Bobcats to two Mid-American Conference division titles and two bowl appearances following the 2006 and 2009 seasons. His 2009 secondary ranked No. 18 in the FBS in pass defense efficiency. The Bobcats led the nation that year with 37 turnovers gained, ranked No. 7 in the country in interceptions (20) and ranked No. 28 in the NCAA in scoring defense, allowing only 21.3 points per game.

From 2001-05, he coached at his alma mater, Cal Poly. His last two seasons at Cal Poly, he served as defensive coordinator. In 2004 and 2005, Cal Poly won the Great West Football Conference Championship, and in 2005 the Mustangs earned their first berth and first victory in the NCAA Division I-AA Playoffs, now the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Both of his seasons as Cal Poly's defensive coordinator, his defense featured the Buck Buchanan Award Winner, which is presented to the outstanding defensive player in the nation at the FCS level. Mustang linebacker Jordan Beck won the award in 2004, and defensive end Chris Gocong captured the award in 2005.
Brown's Cal Poly defenses in 2004 and 2005 ranked among the nation's best as both teams led the nation in quarterback sacks, including a school record 67 sacks in 2005. His 2004 defense led the nation in rushing defense, allowing on average only 84.3 yards per game. His defenses also ranked among the Top 10 nationally in scoring defense, turnovers gained and interceptions.
