Fred Nuesch is in his 56th year with Texas A&M University-Kingsville and his 21st year as the Coordinator of External Affairs. He continues to put out a weekly newspaper insert, the Javelina Highlights. He was granted the title of Sports Information Emeritus status by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents in 2019.
He retired in May of 2003 after 35 years as the Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations.
A native of Malvern, Ark., he holds a bachelor's degree in English from Henderson (Ark.) State University and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri.
He created and edited the TAMUK media guides and programs for the men's and women's sports and his publications received more than 100 awards and citations during a 34-year period.
Nuesch served as the secretary of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for 23 years before retiring in 2002. During that span he was editor of the organization's monthly newsletter and the annual directory. He was named CoSIDA Secretary Emeritus last fall.
Nuesch received the first-ever Distinguished Service Award in 2002 for his service to CoSIDA.
He earned his latest honor in October of 2005 when he was named to the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor.
Nuesch was the recipient of the CoSIDA Arch Ward Award in 1996 and became the first college division SID to receive the award. He is only the fifth representative from a Texas institution or conference to be a recipient since the first award was presented in 1958.
He received the CoSIDA Warren Berg Award, which goes to the college division sports information director of the year, the first year it was presented.
He received the first-ever NCAA Division II Extra-Mile Award in 1996. This award goes to an SID who has promoted Division II football and the Harlon Hill Trophy.
Nuesch is a past president of the NAIA Sports Information Directors Association and is a member of that group's Executive Committee. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1979 and was named the NAIA Sports Information Director of the Year in 1981. He has received the NAIA Award of Merit twice.
He is also a member of the Javelina Hall of Fame.
Nuesch served as the night manager of the main press center at the XXIII Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Calif. in 1984. He was a press officer for the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1986. He also served as a press officer for the United States delegation at the 1987 World University Games in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, and was a press officer at the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle, Wash. He served as a press officer at the U.S. Olympic Festival in San Antonio, Texas in 1993.
He was the recipient of the Henderson State University Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1991 and was inducted into the Paris (Texas) Junior College Hall of Fame in 1993 as a contributor. He covered the PJC athletic teams as a sports editor of the Paris News in 1964-68.
Nuesch holds memberships in the National Association of College Directors of Athletics, the Texas Sports Writers Association, the Football Writers Association of America, the U.S. Track & Field Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
He is a past president of the Kingsville Rotary Club and is a member of the board of directors of the Kingsville Navy League. He is married to the former Joan Howe of Kingsville.
