First Season
Rashad Basey is in his first season as a student assistant coach on the Texas A&M University-Kingsville women’s basketball staff.
A two-year member of the Javelina men’s basketball team, he averaged a team best 16.5 points in 22 games in 2013-14. Averaging 3.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.9 steals per contest, he began the season with a 27-point performance at St. Mary’s University (Nov. 12). Against the Rattlers, Basey added a career-high five blocks and swiped three passes. He surpassed the 20-point plateau eight times, including scoring a season-high 25 points at Texas A&M International University (Nov. 23) and versus Eastern New Mexico University (Feb. 5). He pulled down five or more rebounds five times.
Joining the Hogs after a stint at Kirkwood Community College, he started in all 26 games in 2012-13, leading the team in scoring with 14.2 points per game on 48 percent shooting. He reached double figures in 20 games and earned second team All-Lone Star Conference honors. In just his second game in a Javelina uniform, Basey poured in 21 points and dished out six assists versus Texas Lutheran (Nov. 15).
Against conference rival Eastern New Mexico (Jan. 10), Basey exploded for a career-high 30 points on 13-of-21 shooting. The guard led the team with 3.5 assists/game and 1.5 steals/game.
In his lone season at Kirkwood, Basey was named to the NJCAA Division II All-Region XI first team and also earned NJCAA Division II All-Tournament honors after averaging 10.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.3 steals. Basey shot 53.6 percent from the field.
Prior to Kirkwood, the Louisville, Ky. native played his freshman ball at Moberly Area Community College, averaging 7.3 points, 3.0 assists and 1.7 steals.
Basey led Jeffersontown High School to a 32-3 record and a state championship in 2005-06, averaging 9.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists en route to earning Kentucky High School Athletic Association All-Tournament team honors.
The son of Laron Basey and Tiffany Flippins, he is currently studying criminology. His aunt Kym Hampton played professional basketball for the New York Liberty after being the fourth overall pick in the 1997 WNBA Elite Draft.
