James Black is in his first season as a student assistant coach for the Texas A&M University-Kingsville baseball team in 2015 following an outstanding three-year career.
 
An All-LSC honorable mention honoree last season, Black started all 55 games he appeared in at third base, hitting .265 with four home runs, 24 RBI and 11 doubles. The corner infielder went 3-for-3 with five RBI and two home runs in a career game against Cameron (March 8). The Javelinas went 38-20 en route to an LSC Championship and advanced to the NCAA South Central Regional championship game for the second consecutive season. 2014 marked the third straight season that the Hogs appeared in the postseason tourney.
 
In 2013, he appeared in all 50 games, starting 58 in the hot corner and one at short stop. Black hit .310 with 41 RBI and 36 runs and also belted five home runs, 11 doubles and two triples. Leading the team with 15 multi-RBI contest and 19 multi-hit games, he placed on the LSC Championship All-Tournament team after driving in five runs. He placed on the All-South Central Regional Tournament squad as the Javelinas advanced to the championship game of the NCAA South Central Region.
 
Garnering All-LSC Second Team honors in his first season at TAMUK, he started 39 games in 2012, hitting .284 with two home runs, 10 doubles and 31 RBI. He drove in five on two occasions and held an eight-game hitting streak in the midst of LSC play.
 
He joined Texas A&M-Kingsville after playing a season at Hill Junior College.
 
The son of Johnny and Sharon Black, he is pursuing his undergraduate degree in wildlife management.
