Kingsville - The Texas A&M - Kingsville women's basketball will seek to get back on track in Rul Ross St. against the Lobos in a Saturday-afternoon Lone Star Conference matchup.
The Javelinas are 10-8 on the season overall and 6-6 in LSC play after a last-minute road loss to Western New Mexico Thursday night. They will face off against the 2-13 (1-11) Lobos in Alpine for the first and only time this season.
"We just simply need to be who we are: good decision makers that value the basketball," Head Coach
Michael Madrid said. "Our struggles have been offensive efficiency and lackadaisical offensive possessions. We just need to continue to focus on becoming the best basketball team we can be."
Kingsville currently sits third in the East Division of the LSC and ninth overall, just a half game outside of a tournament spot with 10 games left in the season. They have excelled defensively this season, with the fourth-best scoring defense in the LSC. The team allows opponents to shoot the sixth-worst field goal percentage in the conference. On the offensive side of the ball, much of the Javelinas' attack has been balanced, with the team shooting the third-best percentage in the Lone Star from both the field and three. To get back to their winning ways, Madrid is looking for the team to attack and share the ball more.
"I'd like to see a sense of urgency in getting to the lane and creating for teammates," Madrid said. "We settle for perimeter shots instead of getting post touches with the pass or paint touches off the bounce."
Their opponents have been great at both forcing others to turn the ball over and protecting the ball themselves. The Lobos are top six in the conference in both fewest turnover and most forced turnovers, as well as the third-best TO margin. In that regard, freshman TaMaiya Mims owns one side of the ball, leading the conference in steals, while senior Cheyanne Bonilla has the other, with top-10 numbers in both assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio.
The game will tip off at 1 p.m. and will be the last road game for the Javelinas before they return home for Pack the House night on Thursday January 30th at 5:30 p.m..
