Javelinas drop first matchup of road trip to West Texas

TAMUK falls 74-86 to Lady Buffs in LSC matchup

CANYON, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team faced off against the West Texas Lady Buffs Sunday in Canyon, Texas at the First United Bank Center where they fell short 74-86.
 
 "We are a team without an identity right now on both ends of the floor." said coach Michael Madrid. "I'm proud of our continued fight and effort but we have to stop beating ourselves with mistakes. Defensively we have to guard better at all five positions and offensively we need to execute at a much higher level. We have another opportunity to get better Monday in practice".

Junior Jayde Tschritter was the scoring leader on the day with 15 points, going 5-8 from the field and 3-5 from deep. Tschritter also had 4 rebounds, and an assist in the game. The Javelinas had three scorers in double digits the other two being Mia Rivers with 13 and Shelby Ray with 12.
 
TAMUK shot 48.2% from the field and 46.2% from three, while the Lady Buffs shot 55.0% from the field and 42.1% from deep. West Texas would out rebound also out rebound the Javelinas with 34, while TAMUK had 29.

The Game would begin with the Lady Buffs starting out the game going on a 12-0 run before Shelby Ray was sent to the line sinking both putting it at 12-2 early with 7:18 left in the quarter. The Lady Buffs would go on a 6-2 run from that point putting the score at 4-18 with 5:25 left to go in the quarter. The Javelinas however would close out the quarter going on a 12-4 run that started with a Ray three, and ending with a Georgia Ohiaeri three, taking things into the second down by six 16-22.

The second would start with the Lady Buffs once again getting going early going on a 6-2 run putting the lead to double digits with 7:19 left before the half 18-28. Tschritter would then lead the Javelinas to a 7-0 run, collecting five of those points herself, getting within three with 6:15 left to go in the quarter 25-28. West Texas would respond however going on an 11-0 run putting the lead back up to double digits with 3:14 left to go in the half. Tschritter would hit a three and Rivers would hit a free throw closing the gap to 11 sending things to halftime 40-29.

The third would see the Javelinas come out of the locker room ready to battle as they would battle basket for basket and not allow the Lady Buffs to go on a run of their own until the 4:48 point in the quarter, where they would rattle off 7 straight putting the score at 39-53 with 3:33 left in the third. The Javelinas would bring the deficit back to single digits to end the quarter however as they went on a 10-5 run capped off by an Aina Maynou layup and three sending things to the fourth only down nine 49-58.

The fourth would start with the Lady Buffs scoring first increasing the lead to double digits before yet another well timed Tschritter three would bring the gap to only eight 52-60 with 9:09 left in the game. Both squads would then trade buckets before a West Texas three would start an 11-2 run putting the score to 62-80 with 4:19 left to go. The Javelinas would go on a 5-0 run to chip away at the deficit before the Lady Buffs would again go on a quick 5-2 run putting the deficit to 16 with 2:24 left 69-85. The Javelinas would end the game going on 5-1 run ending things at 74-86.

The Javelinas are on the road again next game in Lubbock, Texas to face off against the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps. The game will take place at the Rip Griffin Center, tip off set for 1 P.M. CST.
