BILLINGS, Montana- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team kicked off the season taking on the #RV Gannon Golden Knights in Billings, Montana where they fell 49-41.
"I thought defensively we didn't play terrible." said coach Michael Madrid. "We lost some shooters that allowed Gannon to break it open a little in the third. Offensively we have to grow and regroup. We were about as bad as we could have been on the offensive end of the floor and still had somewhat of a chance to make it competitive. We will learn from this and it will definitely make us a better team. We are looking forward to the next opportunity."
Senior Georgia Ohiaeri shined for the Javelinas in her final season opener as she came away with 7 rebounds, 11 points and a block, going 7-8 from the charity stripe and 2-4 from the field.
TAMUK uncharacteristically shot 24.0% from the field and 25.0% from the three-point line, with their defensive production keeping them in the game crashing the defensive glass with 30 defensive rebounds and 42 total.
The Javelinas and Golden knights started out the gates a bit cold with the Javelinas shooting 2-15 and the Golden Knights 3-13 from the field. Both squads were perfect from the free throw line however going 5-5 for TAMUK and 2-2 for GSU ending the first Quarter with a 10-9 Gannon lead.
The second quarter got going with a Janessa Payne three knotting the game at 12 a piece before the Golden Knights went on a small 4-0 run. The Javelinas, however, putting together their own 4-0 run made it a 20-18 game before an opposing free throw ended the first half at 21-18.
The Javelinas came out of the half and took and early third quarter lead 22-21 after two Veyda Lake layups in the paint. With the score 24-22 Gannon in front, a full three minutes in the game passed before any team scored again. That team being the Javelinas with two free throws coming from Georgia Ohiaeri tying things at 24. Gannon went on an 11-0 run to end the quarter however making it 35-24 heading into the fourth.
The Fourth started with Ganon continuing the run until a
Georgia Ohiaeri layup got the scoring going for the Javelinas. Two layups and a three the only scoring other than free throws for the Javelinas before the game ended at 49-41.
