Javelinas begin season in Montana taking on Golden Knights

TAMUK heads to the Division II CCA Tip-Off Tournament where they will play a full weekend to begin season

KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville Women's Basketball Team is ready to begin their season with the Javelinas heading to Montana for the Division II CCA Tip-Off Tournament. Their season opener will be against #RV Gannon on Friday at 3:30 PM CST inside the Alterowitz Gymnasium in Billings, Montana.

The Javelinas (0-0, 0-0 LSC) enter the season after a 18-11 season that saw the squad compile a 15-7 Lone Star Conference record and secure an LSC Tournament berth for the second consecutive year. Additionally, the campaign saw the Javelinas go completely even across home and road games having a 9-4 record for both. Among those victories includes an upset over No. 2 ranked West Texas A&M.

TAMUK returns nine from the previous season, including this year's Preseason Player to Watch Mia Rivers who was a 2022-23 All-LSC Third Team selection after averaging 10.0 points per game and having the second-best assist total in the conference, posting 142 total assists on the year putting her average at 4.9 per game. Along with Rivers, the Javelinas bring back Senior and All-LSC Third Team selection Georgia Ohiaeri. Juniors Veyda Lake, Janessa Payne, All-LSC Honorable Mention Jayde Tschritter, and Sophomores Alyssa O' Malley, Shelby Ray, Bella Sipowicz, and Devon Williams. Additionally, the Javelinas bring three newcomers to the squad in, Aina Maynou, Brooke Lechleitner, and Abby Bala who all look to provide an immediate impact as transfers.

Gannon (0-0, 0-0 PSAC) comes off a 29-5 season, with a 19-3 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record making it to the PSAC Championship game and the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. The Golden Knights do however lose seven players having a younger squad bringing in six freshman and two transfers to add to the six returners currently on the squad.

This will be the first time either team meets one another, and they will be meeting on a neutral court in the Alterowitz Gymnasium this first time.
