Javelinas take on Miners falling short in exhibition matchup

TAMUK finishes up exhibition slate dropping close game to UTEP

El Paso, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team took to the court inside the Don Haskins arena in "The Sun City" El Paso, Texas for an exhibition matchup against the UTEP Miners.
 
 "Extremely proud of our group." said coach Michael Madrid. "We competed and got better in a tremendous basketball environment. I thought we exceled at a high level and took what the defense gave us and didn't force anything. So many areas to improve upon but I love how we are trending. Looking forward to our next opportunity".

Junior Janessa Payne perfect on the day going 3-3 from beyond the arc and 4-4 from the field racking up a team high 11 points. Junior Veyda Lake also a force as she was able to come away with 10 points going 5-6 from the field.
 
TAMUK outshot UTEP going 50.0% from the field, and 40.0% from beyond the arc, leaving the Miners shooting 41.5% from the field and 12.5% from deep. The Javelinas also outshot their opponent from the freethrow line as well going 55.6% compared to UTEP's 50.0%.

The Javelinas and Miners both came ready to play until a stoppage at the 9:11 mark cooled things down a bit before the restart in which UTEP put up two baskets making it an early 4-0 game with 8:21 left to go in the quarter. Jayde Tschritter however would get things jumpstarted once again for the Javelinas draining a pullup jumper with 7:35 left to go in the quarter. Janessa Payne, and Veyda Lake would join in on the action Payne draining a three and Lake laying one in putting TAMUK in front of the Miners early 7-6. The Miners would make a free throw tying things at 7 apiece before the Javelinas rattled off a couple free throws and a bucket of their own once again in the lead 11-7. The 4:34 mark would be the last Javelina score in the quarter as the Miners went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter 13-11

Each squad trading blows to begin the second quarter, until the 7:13 point where the Javelinas would go on an 11-3 run making it 26-21 with 4:44 to go before half. The Miners going on a 6-0 run of their own last scored at the 3:10 point before both teams hit a drought. This lasting for a full two minutes and some change before the Javelinas put four quick on the board making it a 30-28 score going into half.                                                     

The Javelinas would come out of the locker room on fire going on a 7-0 run to start the quarter all starting with a Georgia Ohiaeri deep ball. The Miners would respond however going on a 5-0 run of their own before going shot for shot with the Javelinas. Both teams going shot for shot midway through the third before the Javelinas ended the quarter on a 5-2 run heading into the fourth up three.

The Fourth saw  a different side of both squads as the Miners woke up and the Javelinas went cold. The Javelinas only scoring a combined seven points in the quarter out scored by UTEP's 18. The Javelinas last scoring at the 4:35 marker in the game still up two before the Miners went on to take the game 55-63.

The Javelinas are back on the road next time out heading to Gunnison, Colorado taking on the Western Colorado Mountianeers November 17th at 6:00 PM CST.
