RICHARDSON, TEXAS – On Thursday, the Lone Star Conference announced the annual Scholar-Athlete Award winners. Earning the honors for Texas A&M – Kingsville are redshirt senior D.J. Delancy of the track and field team and senior Brianna Pena of women's basketball.
For Delancy, this marks yet another highlight to his already impressive resume in the circle and the classroom. Along with this award the redshirt senior from Bethel Town, Jamaica has won a Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track & Field title in the men's shot put, was named to the All-LSC outdoor track and field first-team, as well as been named LSC Outdoor Track & Field Academic Athlete of the Year and earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Track & Field/Cross Country Team this year.
The thrower is studying biomedical sciences while here at Kingsville and boasts a 4.00 GPA in his master's program.
Pena earns the award with a 4.00 GPA here at TAMUK while studying industrial management & engineering. In 2021, the guard from Weslaco, Texas earned All-LSC second-team honors, and before coming to Kingsville was a two-time NJCAA Academic All-American while at Hill College.
She also plans to pursue an MBA in the Fall.

Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and one female student-athlete at member institutions. These student-athletes are selected as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship, and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the year. To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and be a member of the graduating class.
