ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Sophomore Kayla Gonzales (San Antonio, Texas) drove in six runs and junior Jory Cervantes (Pflugerville, Texas) picked up six hits as the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team routed the Henderson State Reddies, 10-2, and the Ouachita Baptist Tigers, 11-1, on Saturday afternoon in Arkadelphia, Ark. at Dee White Field.
TAMUK's 10-game win streak is the longest since they won 19-in-a-row in 2019 and they improved to 10-1 in 2022.
"I thought we did a nice job offensively today and pitched really well," said coach Craig Nicholson. "Our six through nine hitters were really productive today and did great job turning over the lineup."
TAMUK vs. Henderson State
The Javelina feeding frenzy began with a Jennifer Giesey (Crystal Lake, Ill.) RBI single in the second inning and TAMUK struck for three more in the third. First, Gonzales drilled a two-run homer to make it 3-0, then doubles by juniors Matisen Onofrei (Mesa, Ariz.) and Jackie De Los Santos (Kingsville, Texas) plated the inning's final run.
Gonzales and Onofrei were at it again in the fourth, with Gonzales coming up with two on and lacing a two-run double to left. Onofrei then stepped up and sent one over the left field wall to make the score 8-0. After the Reddies got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, Gonzales tallied two more RBIs with another double in the fifth for the game's final runs.
The beneficiary of this run support was sophomore Lizette Del Angel (Robstown, Texas), who notched her second win of the year by tossing all five innings. She allowed two earned runs on five hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out four.
TAMUK vs. Ouachita Baptist
On the mound for the Blue and Gold in the second game was sophomore Beth Montes (San Antonio, Texas) and she boosted her record to 3-0 with seven innings of one-run ball. The Tigers managed only four hits and didn't draw a walk while Montes tallied five strikeouts. Montes has allowed only a single earned run in her last 20 innings.
Run support for the Javelina starter arrived in droves, starting in the first inning with an RBI double by Onofrei, who later scored on an error. In the third, Cervantes came across when she stole second and an OBU error allowed her to race home.
TAMUK plated three more runs in the fourth on a pair of errors and a Cervantes triple, then De Los Santos cracked an RBI double into center in the fifth. The Javs scored their final three runs in the seventh on back-to-back RBI doubles from senior Kaylee Dietrich (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Giesey and an Anissa Lechner (McKinney, Texas) sacrifice fly.
The Javs have two more assignments on Sunday, taking on Christian Brothers at 10 a.m. and Midwestern State at 12:30 p.m. Stay current with Javelina softball by following @TAMUKSB and @JavelinaSports on both Twitter and Instagram, liking the Javelina Sports Facebook page, subscribing to the Javelina Athletics YouTube Channel and visiting Javelinaathletics.com.
