LAWTON, Okla. – Freshman Damian Rodriguez (McAllen, Texas) and junior Will Arnold (Magnolia, Texas) each drove in three runs and junior Tyler Henson (Abilene, Texas) tossed six innings of scoreless relief to propel the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team past the Cameron Aggies, 13-4 on Sunday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at McCord Field in Lawton, Okla.
This win puts TAMUK at 20-10 overall, 19-10 in the LSC and locks the Javs into the No. 3 seed in the LSC Tournament. CU's season finishes with them at 8-31 overall and 8-25 in conference play.
TAMUK's lineup got to work quickly in the top of the first, loading the bases with nobody out to bring up Arnold, who cleared the bases by slicing a triple into the right-field corner. When the Javelina catcher scored one batter later on a groundout, the visitors has seized a 4-0 lead.
Unfortunately for the Hogs, that lead was short-lived, as the Aggies used four second-inning hits, the last of which was a Beau Williams RBI double, to tie the score. One inning later, Henson entered the game and completely silenced CU's lineup. The junior from Abilene gave up a single to the first batter he faced, but that would be the only hit he allowed all day. At one point he retired 14 in-a-row in his longest outing ever as a Javelina. He also only walked only one while striking out six.
A rally in the fifth put the Javs ahead for good and it started with three consecutive walks to bring up Rodriguez and he lined a two-run single through the middle. Sophomore Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas), who finished the day with four hits, then smacked a double into left-center for a pair of RBIs and an 8-4 lead. Before the inning was over, two more TAMUK runs had crossed the plate to increase their lead to six.
In the seventh, doubles by Bonuz and junior Hayden Fails (Sweeny, Texas) and an RBI single courtesy of senior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) padded the Javs' lead to nine and junior Mason Foster (Dilley, Texas) iced the game by recording the last three outs.
The next time the Javelinas take the field, it will be in the LSC Tournament and TAMUK will be at home for the first round, which will pit them against Lubbock Christian in a best-of-three series beginning on Friday.
