Rambelles deal Javelinas a pair of losses

Javs finish final regular season road trip at 2-2

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team was held to three runs in two games by the Angelo State Rambelles, who dealt the Javelinas a pair of defeats on Saturday by scores of 10-2 and 3-1 in Lone Star Conference action at Mayer Field in San Angelo, Texas.

These defeats brought TAMUK's three-game win streak to an end, put them at 24-11 overall and 16-8 in the LSC, placing them fifth in the conference, one game behind 17-7 ASU.

GAME ONE

The Javelinas quickly found themselves in a hole in the opener thanks to four-run Rambelle first inning. The home team started their rally with three straight one-out singles and a walk to Keilei Garcia broke the ice. Jade Strother followed with a run-scornig single and a TAMUK error on the play allowed two more runs to score for a 4-0 ASU lead.

The lead was stretched to five in the second before a Kayla Gonzales (San Antonio, Texas) RBI groundout got the visitors on the board in the third. That run was immediately answered by a Hatty Shope homer in the bottom of the frame and the Rambelles added one more in the fourth.

The second run of the day for the Javs came on an Anastasia Leibas (Del Valle, Texas) long ball in the sixth, only for ASU to respond with three runs to end the game, the last two coming on consecutive hit-by-pitches.

GAME TWO

Freshman Beth Montes (San Antonio, Texas) and Genesis Armendariz spent the first four innings trading zeroes and Montes retired the side in order in three of those frames.

The Javs broke the ice in the fourth when a walk and a hit brought up Leibas with two outs. She served an 0-2 pitch into right-center to score freshman Sarah Montes (San Antonio, Texas) with the go-ahead run. Unfortunately for the Javelinas, this would be the last threat they would mount against Armendariz, who didn't allow a hit the rest of the day.

TAMUK's 1-0 margin nearly held up, but in the seventh, Strother doubled with one out and took third on groundout. After a walk, a Javelina throwing error allowed Strother to cross the plate with the game-tying run. The Rambelles ended the game in the eighth when, with two outs Ashlynn Box walked to bring up Courtney Barnhill, who drilled a walk-off two-run homer to left.

The Javelinas return to action at home on Friday, when they'll play a pair against Midwestern State, with the opener scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Stay current with Javelina softball by following @TAMUKSB and @JavelinaSports on both Twitter and Instagram, liking the Javelina Sports Facebook page, subscribing to the Javelina Athletics YouTube Channel and visiting Javelinaathletics.com.
