SILVER CITY, N.M. – Freshman Lizette Del Angel (Calallen, Texas) twirled a complete-game shutout in game one and junior Claire Chernosky (Sugar Land, Texas) picked up five hits and three RBIs, helping propel the No. 14 Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the Western New Mexico Mustangs by scores of 4-0 and 6-3 on Sunday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at the WNMU Softball Field in Silver City, N.M.
The Javelinas now own a 20-5 record and their 13-3 mark is tied for third-best in the LSC. They also finished their current road trip with a 4-0 record.
"I thought we pitched really well today," said coach Craig Nicholson. "Lizette was really good in game one and our offense did just enough to get two wins. Give them some credit, they made every play in both games and turned a couple high level double plays."
GAME ONE
Del Angel spent the day's first seven innings putting the clamps on the Mustangs' lineup. She tossed her first complete game shutout as a Javelina, permitting only six singles, not walking a batter and striking out seven in seven innings. Del Angel didn't permit a runner past second base until the final frame.
Early run support arrived for Del Angel in the first, when sophomore Jory Cervantes (Pflugerville, Texas) singled, swiped second and scored on a hit to right by freshman Natalie Rodriguez (Edinburg, Texas). Two innings later, sophomore Matisen Onofrei (Mesa, Ariz.) slapped a single through the middle to score Anastasia Leibas (Del Valle, Texas) with TAMUK's second run.
A single and a double started the fourth inning for the Blue and Gold and Cervantes blooped a hit into left-center for her team's third run. Chernosky's RBI single in the fifth closed out the scoring and Del Angel did the rest.
GAME TWO
The Javelinas put their first two on in the second to bring up Chernosky and she sent a two-run double into the left field corner. Following a walk and a groundout, freshman Kayla Gonzales (San Antonio, Texas) lined a hit through the middle that plated a pair and upped the visitors' advantage to 4-0.
The Mustangs quickly cut that lead in half in the bottom of the second, but TAMUK's four-run edge was restored in the fourth, thanks to Leibas, who drilled a two-run homer to center, her sixth of the year.
Another comeback attempt by WNMU ensued, starting with a Nikki Medina RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, but the Javs shut the door after that. With two out in the fifth, sophomore Saidi Castillo (Kingsville, Texas) entered in relief and retired the first four batters she faced. The Mustangs began the seventh with an infield hit, but Castillo set down the next three hitters to earn her first save of the year.
TAMUK's next pitch will be thrown at Laredo, Texas on Thursday, when they play a non-conference doubleheader against the Texas A&M International Dustdevils.
