LUBBOCK, Texas - An absolute gem on the mound from junior
Logan Garza (Round Rock, Texas) nearly went by the wayside on Saturday at Hays Field as the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program erased a two-run deficit in the top of the ninth and won out in extras over Lubbock Christian to take game two of the Lone Star Conference series.
Garza finished with 15 strikeouts on the hill for the Javelinas (10-4, 10-4 LSC), reaching a mark that had not been seen by any Hog pitcher since All-American Garrett Murdy retired 19 in a matchup against Tarleton on March 5, 2004.
The Chaps (7-10, 6-8 LSC) took the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth but gave up a two-run shot to left from senior
Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) before an RBI single from junior
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) put the Hogs up for good.
Servin cracked the scoreboard first for the visitors in the opening frame with a two-run blast to left. He finished with four hits on the day in five at-bats, a new career-best for him, along with three RBI, one run and a walk.
LCU got one run back in the bottom of the fourth after a balk allowed Cayde Ward to come home. TAMUK tacked on another in the top of the sixth after senior
Aldo Buendia (Laredo, Texas) and freshman
Garrett Thompson (New Braunfels, Texas) executed a clean double-steal that drew an errant throw down to third and allowed Buendia to come home.
The hosts tied it in the seventh after RBI singles from Grant Griffin and Eduardo Acosta evened the count at 3-3 heading into the eighth.
The visitors regained the lead briefly on another LCU miscue in the top of the eighth, this time on a failed back-pick attempt that granted freshman
Damian Rodriguez (McAllen, Texas) access to the plate. The lead swung right back to the Chaps in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single from Nolan Machibroda and a two-run triple from Caden Hensley before Spinn served up the tying round-tripper in the ninth.
Neither side made headway in the 10th while a leadoff double from senior
Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) in the top of the 11th set up Servin's go-ahead single to right that clinched the win for TAMUK.
Garza, through all this time, retired all seven leadoff batters he faced in the contest. He recorded multiple strikeouts in six innings, including two of which where he struck out the side.
In total, Garza finished with 6.1 innings on the hill and scattered three hits and two walks for the no-decision. He was given the hook for junior
Tyler Henson (Abilene, Texas) who took over the next 1.1 innings before classmate
Amado Almanzar (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) grabbed the reigns with one out in the eighth.
Almanzar recorded the decision after going 2.1 innings on the bump with three strikeouts and one hit given up. Buendia was tasked with his third save opportunity in the 11th and came away with a scoreless frame to end the contest.
The game three rubber match takes place on Sunday, March 21, at Hays Field with first pitch set for 1 p.m. CT.
