Slugfest evens the series for Javelinas against Dustdevils

Servin connects for two home runs; De Leon adds one of his own in 13-0 rout

LAREDO, Texas - Three home runs and a bases-clearing double from senior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) were in order for the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program on Sunday at Jorge Haynes Field in a 13-0 rout of Texas A&M International in Lone Star Conference action.

"The biggest thing we will ever have to do in life is respond," said head coach Jason Gonzales, "and I was proud of the way the guys showed up today.

"We put ourselves in a position to win a series on the road."

The Javelinas (1-1, 1-1 LSC) got two home runs from junior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) and a solo shot from senior Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) alongside Spinn's extra-base knock to even the series against the Dustdevils (3-5, 3-5 LSC).

Servin's first round-tripper came in the top of the fourth immediately following Spinn's bases-clearing double to left field as the two combined to push the lead to 7-0. TAMUK held a 2-0 edge going into the frame courtesy of an RBI groundout from redshirt sophomore Matthew Stary (Houston, Texas) in the second and De Leon's solo shot to right center in the third.

Redshirt sophomore Caleb Nash (San Antonio, Texas), getting his first career start behind the plate, tacked on another run in the fifth with an RBI groundout to plate senior Aldo Buendia (Laredo, Texas). The sixth inning featured Servin's second moon shot of the day as he roped another pitch over the left field wall that set the lead at 11-0 heading into the bottom half of the frame.

Servin had another opportunity to continue his tear through TAMIU's pitching rotation in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out, but instead took the walk for his sixth RBI of the day. It was the most RBI for a Javelina since Dallas Stefano put away nine in a 21-20 barnburner against Tarleton in the 2018 LSC Tournament as Stefano finished with three home runs that day.

The final run for the Blue and Gold came in the form of a sacrifice fly to right from freshman Matthew Castro (Corpus Christi, Texas) later in the seventh.

On the other side of the shut out, redshirt junior Amado Almanzar (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) was handed the reins and turned in five scoreless innings on the bump. He finished with six strikeouts to only two walks and two hits allowed for his first win of the season.

Almanzar gave way to sophomore Matthew Sesler (Harlingen, Texas) in the sixth who turned in a scoreless frame with only one hit allowed, while redshirt sophomore Jacob Vasquez (Victoria, Texas) closed out the seventh umblemished.

The series finale will take place at 1 p.m. CT at Jorge Haynes Field on Monday, February 22.
