Javelinas complete perfect weekend with 61-43 win over Angelo State

TAMUK snaps nine-game losing streak to the Rambelles following Saturday bout

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program snapped a nine-game losing streak to Angelo State on Saturday with a 61-43 victory in the non-conference matchup at the Steinke Physical Education Center to complete the perfect weekend.

The Javelinas (6-2) used a 9-2 run to close the first quarter for a 17-7 lead over the Rambelles (0-8) and never looked back as they pushed their lead to 20 points en route to the decision.

TAMUK took an 8-3 lead by the media timeout in the opening stanza with freshman Mia Rivers (College Station, Texas) collecting the first five points on a fast break layup and a three-pointer. Junior Mia Cherry (Brock, Texas) tacked on a trey of her own at 3:12 to ignite the scoring run for the hosts that led to the 17-7 cushion going into the second.

The Blue and Gold put up eight of the first nine points of the following quarter for a 25-8 advantage and kept the Belles at arm's length with a 29-12 lead heading into halftime. The Javelinas made judicious use of the charity stripe in the quarter with six freebies total, getting two each from Rivers, fellow freshman Janessa Payne (Aledo, Texas), and junior Brianna Pena (Weslaco, Texas).

A three-pointer from Cherry later on in the third pushed the gap to 39-19 over the Rambelles as she later converted the classic three-point play at 2:21 for a 42-21 lead. The Javelinas kept a comfortable lead heading into the final frame as a long-range shot from Sadie Misner set the score at 43-24 going into the fourth.

ASU trimmed its deficit down to 52-41 with 4:26 remaining in the game, but a mid-range jumper from Rivers squelched any hope of a last-minute comeback as TAMUK took nine of the last 11 points for the win.

It is only the sixth time the Javelinas defeated the Rambelles in the last 36 meetings between the programs. The last win came on March 1, 2014, when the Blue and Gold defeated ASU at the SPEC to close out the regular season as the previous nine matchups went in favor of the Belles.

Cherry led all scorers once again with 15 points on a 5-for-8 clip from the floor, including 2-of-4 from long range and 3-of-4 from the stripe. She added three rebounds and four steals in the process as she surpassed the 10-point mark for the third time in four games.

Pena added 14 points off the bench, her third consecutive game back in the rotation scoring over 10 points. Rivers rounded out the trio with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, one block and a steal as she, too, scored over 10 points for the third time in four games.

The Javelinas have a two-week hiatus and return to action on Saturday, December 18, with a road contest against St. Edward's in Austin, Texas.
