Javelinas drop duel with Ragin’ Cajuns

Cherry leads TAMUK with 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting in 84-58 loss

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program faced Louisiana in an exhibition matchup on Tuesday at the Cajundome in the unofficial start to the 2021-22 season.

The Ragin' Cajuns (1-0) opened up a double-digit lead by the first media timeout and never looked back as they handed the Javelinas an 84-58 loss.

Louisiana was in control most of the opening quarter, building up a 15-2 lead just ahead of the first media timeout. The Javelinas outscored the Ragin' Cajuns from that point, 12-8, despite facing a 23-14 deficit at the first break.

Sophomore Georgia Ohiaeri (Las Vegas, Nev.) put away six points in the first stanza, including one from long range, while fellow newcomer Kryslyn Jones (Edmond, Okla.) tacked on five of her own with a shot from long range.

ULL opened up the second frame on a 10-3 run that extended the visitor's deficit to 33-17 by the media break. Ohiaeri, junior Mia Cherry (Brock, Texas), and freshman Mia Rivers (College Station, Texas) all poured in points for TAMUK through the remainder of the half for a 41-23 deficit at the break.

The Javelinas found their rhythm in the third quarter but couldn't make a dent in the lead built up by the Ragin' Cajuns. Cherry put away nine points in the frame that pushed her total into double figures, while freshman Jayde Tschritter (Corpus Christi, Texas) drained a pair of treys as TAMUK trailed 70-43 going into the fourth.

TAMUK kept pace with ULL for the remainder of the contest but ultimately ended on the backend of the decision to the Ragin' Cajuns.

Cherry led the Javelinas with 14 points while shooting 6-for-12 from the floor. She also added four rebounds and three assists for TAMUK. Ohiaeri, making her Blue and Gold debut, added 12 points while missing just one shot in six attempts and added three rebounds.

Tschritter was the final Javelina to crack double digits in scoring as she finished with 11 on a 4-for-10 clip, tacking on three rebounds and one assist in the process.

The Javelinas officially open the 2021-22 season at home for the LSC/RMAC Crossover matchup against Chadron State on Friday, November 12, with tipoff set for 3 p.m. CT at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
