Javelinas Secure Second Sweep of Season in Win over Aggies

Four players score in double figures en route to 78-70 decision

KINGSVILLE, Texas - Four different players scored in double figures for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program on Saturday at the Steinke Physical Education Center to take a Lone Star Conference win over Cameron and the second weekend sweep of the season at 78-70.

MICHAEL MADRID POSTGAME INTERVIEW | JANESSA PAYNE POSTGAME INTERVIEW

It is only the second time on the year four different members recorded at least 10 points for the Javelinas (6-6, 6-6 LSC) while the defensive effort held the Aggies (3-5, 3-5 LSC) to a 35% shooting clip from the floor. The last time TAMUK had four players in double figures was game two of the season-opening sweep of UAFS on December 12.

For the second consecutive game junior Mia Cherry (Brock, Texas) led the Blue and Gold with 20 points off the bench on a 7-for-11 look from the floor, including a 5-for-8 mark from beyond the arc. She also added four rebounds and five assists to her total.

Freshman Janessa Payne (Aledo, Texas) made her presence felt on both ends of the court as she posted 16 points on a near-flawless 5-for-6 clip along with nine rebounds and a pair of helpers. Junior Brianna Pena (Weslaco, Texas) reached her double-digit threshold with 11 points alongside two rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Newcomer Devon Williams (Gonzales, Texas) rounded out the quartet with 10 points off the bench, going 4-for-6 in her efforts, along with three rebounds, one assist, one block and a pickpocket.

TAMUK held an early lead when Payne drained her first triple before a minute had eclipsed on the scoreboard at 5-2, but became mired in a drought not long after while CU pushed its advantage to 15-5 past the midpoint. An open look from Williams with four minutes to spare ended the dearth for the Blue and Gold, but they now faced a 20-13 deficit going into the second.

The Javelinas flipped the script over the next 10 minutes, outscoring their opponents 25-9 in the frame and going on a 23-4 run over an eight-minute span for a 38-29 cushion at the break. The hosts used five triples and six different scorers during the run with Cherry, Payne, Pena, and Williams, alongside the freshmen duo of Mia Rivers (College Station, Texas) and Jayde Tschritter (Corpus Christi, Texas), all tossing their hat into the ring to regain the lead.

The third quarter saw a status quo take effect with TAMUK maintaining a double-digit lead through most of the stanza. CU cut the gap to five near the two-minute mark, but a timely trey from Cherry, along with back-to-back buckets in the paint from Williams and senior Anastacia Mickens (Beaumont, Texas) in the closing seconds, pushed the lead back out to 10 at 55-45 going into the fourth.

TAMUK pushed its advantage to 18 off a three from Tschritter midway through the final period at 72-54 before the Aggies used an 11-point burst across a three-minute duration to get the deficit back to single digits. The ending played out the same as Friday's contest, however, with the Blue and Gold getting six free throws in the final 100 seconds to lock in their win.

The Javelinas' schedule resumes next week with another divisional matchup as they face St. Edward's in a home-and-home starting on Thursday, February 4 in Austin, Texas.
