KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program brought their 2019-20 season to a close on Saturday at the Steinke Physical Education Center with a 66-37 loss to Tarleton in Lone Star Conference action.
"Our team continued to play hard and fight to the end against a talented Tarleton team," said head coach
Michael Madrid, who officially closed his first season at the helm of the program. "I'm proud of our effort tonight and thankful for the opportunity to coach Lidia [Guiral] and Angelica [Wall] in their senior year."
The Javelinas (4-20, 3-19 LSC) honored their two seniors in
Lidia Guiral (Fraga, Spain) and
Angelica Wall (Pueblo, Colo.) at halftime of the men's game after the Texans (21-7, 15-7 LSC) came away with the decision.
TSU held the early 8-2 lead in the first quarter before a trey from sophomore
Bridget Upton (George West, Texas) cut the gap to 8-5 with 7:33 showing on the clock. Both side added another bucket before the visitors took five of the final seven points for a 15-9 edge heading into the second.
Tarleton quickly pushed the gap to double digits, eventually owning a 22-point cushion by the midpoint of the quarter at 34-12. Redshirt sophomore
Bri-Anna Soliz (San Angelo, Texas) ended the scoring drought for the hosts with a mid-range jumper at the 4:15 mark before Upton drained another three-pointer less than a minute later.
The Texans had the final say in the half as Marissa Escamilla and Kylie Collins set the score at 39-17 going into the break. The Javelinas were kept at arm's length through the majority of the third and set the score at 44-25 behind a pair of free throws from junior
Treazure Mouton (Houston, Texas) at the 6:12 mark, but TSU tacked on the final four points for a 48-25 lead going into the fourth.
Both sides traded baskets the rest of the way with Upton providing the final say with her team-high 13th point on a jumper in the paint in the closing seconds before the score was finalized at 66-37. She shot 5-for-9 from the floor on the day, including a 3-for-5 mark from beyond the arc, to go with two rebounds, two assists and one steal.
