Soliz nabs fifth career double-double in loss to Rambelles

Redshirt sophomore from San Angelo, Texas, posts 10 points and 11 rebounds for Javelinas

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Showing up in her hometown, redshirt sophomore Bri-Anna Soliz (San Angelo, Texas) put away her fifth career double-double for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team at the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center, but her effort alone wasn't enough to turn the tide as Angelo State came away with the Lone Star Conference decision at 58-39.

"We weren't very sharp on either end of the floor tonight," said head coach Michael Madrid. "I thought we came out flat and didn't control their perimeter players which led to layups.

"Offensively, we continue to struggle to score. We have an opportunity to get better tomorrow and we will."

The Javelinas (4-17, 3-16 LSC) started off in a defensive battle with the Rambelles (15-8, 12-7 LSC) before the hosts pulled away in the second and never looked back en route to the win.

The low-scoring first quarter was punctuated by the ninth ASU point with 3:42 showing on the clock, while Soliz put away a pair of free throws at the 2:04 mark to set the score at 9-5 going into the second.

The Rambelles posted a 17-3 run to start the following frame as freshman Maeghan Palmer (Midlothian, Texas) drained a shot from long range to open the scoring for the visitors in the quarter. Soliz once again had the final say before going to the break as her driving layup in the waning second put the score at 27-14 with 20 minutes of game time elapsed.

ASU kept TAMUK at a fair distance throughout most of the third, eventually carrying a 47-25 score into the fourth. Soliz tallied her 10th point of the contest with 3:18 remaining in the game to cement her fifth double-double in her two years donning the Blue and Gold. She grabbed her 10th rebound earlier in the quarter following a missed three-pointer from the Rambelles' Lana Marov.

Soliz's last double-double came on February 28, 2019, when she put away 15 points and 13 rebounds in a 91-80 loss to Cameron on the road in the final week of play in the regular season. It is also the third double-double in the 2019-20 campaign with sophomore Jalynn Johnson (Sugar Land, Texas) owning the other two.

Finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds, Soliz shot at a 3-for-7 clip from the floor to go with one assist and one steal. Junior Anastacia Mickens (Beaumont, Texas) added eight points and six rebounds in the starting lineup, followed by seven points and three rebounds from sophomore Bridget Upton (George West, Texas)

The Javelinas' final regular-season road game is set for Saturday, February 22, in Lubbock, Texas, as they take on the defending national champion in NCAA Division II in Lubbock Christian starting at 1 p.m. CT at the Rip Griffin Center.
