Javelinas roll past Lions to sweep weekend series

TAMUK leads wire-to-wire to open 2-0 in LSC play for the first time since 2008-09

KINGSVILLE, Texas - For the first time since 2008-09 the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program improved to 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play as the team sprinted past UAFS on Saturday at the Steinke Physical Education Center en route to an 83-64 final score.

MICHAEL MADRID POSTGAME INTERVIEW | ANASTACIA MICKENS POSTGAME INTERVIEW

The Javelinas (2-0, 2-0 LSC) led wire-to-wire in the contest once senior Anastacia Mickens (Beaumont, Texas) buried the contests' first bucket just after the tip while the Lions (0-2, 0-2 LSC) never ventured within double digits following the midway point of the second.

Mickens was one of four members of the Blue and Gold to reach the double-digit threshold as her 10 points came on the heels of a 4-for-8 shooting performance. She was matched by freshman Veyda Lake (Houston, Texas), who added 10 off the bench, while the junior transfer duo of Mia Cherry (Brock, Texas) and Brianna Pena (Weslaco, Texas) served as the one-two punch at 14 points apiece.

The 83 points scored by the Javelinas was the first time since 2013-14 the program recorded at least 80 points in consecutive games, last accomplished in an 83-77 win over Midwestern State on February 22, followed by an 83-67 decision over Angelo State the next week on March 1.

It was also the first time since 2015-16 the team started the season 2-0 as that year saw the Blue and Gold open the schedule with a 60-57 win over Texas A&M International on November 13 before clinching a 62-44 win over Concordia (Calif.) the next day at the TexAnn Tip-Off Classic in Stephenville, Texas.

The Javelinas held a 14-9 advantage at the end of the first and used a 16-3 run early in the second for a 30-14 cushion at 3:33 on the clock. A pair of free throws from Cherry midway through the run pushed the lead into double digits as the team never looked back from that point.

Another 10-2 run in the second kept the lead at 40-23 heading into the break and back-to-back threes from Cherry and freshman Jayde Tschritter (Corpus Christi, Texas) early in the third ballooned the lead to 46-25. TAMUK never allowed UAFS within 16 through the remainder of the game for the 83-64 final.

The last time the program went 2-0 to start the conference schedule in 2008-09 saw the Blue and Gold defeat Tarleton on the road on January 14 at 82-78 before coming home on January 17 to move past Midwestern State at 63-57.

The Javelinas will head out on the road next week to take on Angelo State for the first of two games starting on Friday, December 18, at the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
