Javelinas fall in Series Finale to No. 1/14 Rams

Spinn posts first multi-home run game of 2019

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program trailed wire-to-wire on Sunday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium in the Lone Star Conference series finale against No. 1/14 Angelo State and eventually fell 14-6 to bring the final road series of 2019 to a close.

The Javelinas (25-19, 9-11 LSC) got two home runs from junior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) but he alone was unable to ignite the lineup as the Rams (42-7, 22-2 LSC) came away with the sweep.

ASU struck first in the bottom of the opening frame with doubles from Josh Eliver and Lachlan Mayo, before an RBI single from sophomore Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) in the top of the second put the line score at 2-1.

A sacrifice fly from Nic Novak put the deficit back at two before Spinn smashed his first round-tripper of the contest to center field in the top of the third for a 3-2 score favoring the hosts.

The Rams had the response yet against in the bottom of the third after putting away four runs courtesy of a pair of singles and a Novak double, while a solo shot from Mayo in the bottom of the fourth set the gap at six runs with an 8-2 score showing on the board.

Spinn stepped up and cranked a three-run, opposite-field home run to left center that narrowed the cushion to three runs in the top of the fifth, but a bases-loaded groundout from Elvir in the bottom half kept the visitors at bay.

Redshirt senior Alex Gonzalez (Corpus Christi, Texas) ripped a double down the left field line with redshirt junior Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) standing on first and Ullman eventually made it home after a misplay on the ball by the left fielder granted him access to the plate.

Unfortunately that became the final run for the Hogs as ASU poured on five more in the sixth and seventh to cement the score at 14-6.

Spinn finished the day with one walk in addition to his two jacks, adding four RBI and two runs in the process. He was matched by Gonzalez and redshirt senior Mannny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) in the hit count as the trio all finished with two.

Sophomore Tyler Flores (San Antonio, Texas) took the loss after getting the start and bowing out in the third with two punchouts.

The Javelinas will be back at Nolan Ryan Field this coming week for the final series of 2019 against Eastern New Mexico to close Lone Star Conference play starting on Friday, May 3.
