Javelinas drop series opener to No. 1/14 Angelo State

Saturday doubleheader set for 4 p.m. start time

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program fell behind early to No. 1/14 Angelo State on Friday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium, and eventually dropped a 10-0 decision in the Lone Star Conference series opener.

The Javelinas (25-16, 9-8 LSC) had eight batters reach safely throughout the course of the game but could not solve the riddle of Josh Barnett who heaved the Rams (39-7, 19-2 LSC) to the win behind a complete-game shutout.

TAMUK left a runner on the base paths in four of the first five innings of the contest with the best opportunity coming in the top of the fourth after redshirt senior Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) started the frame off with a walk.

Freshman Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas) ripped a double into the left center gap to put two runners in scoring position, while redshirt junior Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) loaded the bases with a two-out free pass.

Unfortunately, Barnett squashed the rally as he sat down the final Hog on strikes to keep the Javelinas off the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, ASU posted the first run in the bottom of the opening stanza following a liner into right from Jacob Finke, while four runs came home in the bottom of the fourth through a variety of means, including a sacrifice bunt, a Javelina miscue, and a pair of singles.

A passed ball in the bottom of the fifth set the box score at 6-0 favoring the hosts, while four more runs came across in the sixth for the Rams to set up the decision by run rule.

Barnett sat down the Hogs in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the shutout as TAMUK suffered the loss.

Ullman, along with junior Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) were the only two Javelinas to reach safely multiple times as each tallied a single and a walk in the contest.

Senior Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) was given the start and got the hook after three and 1/3 innings on the hill while taking his fifth loss of the campaign.

Saturday's doubleheader is set for a first pitch time of 4 p.m. as TAMUK looks to rebound from the loss.
