Boyett leads Javelinas to Sunday Split with Falcons

Junior from Robinson, Texas, hurls second complete-game shutout of the year

ODESSA, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program was the beneficiary of a complete-game shutout on the front end of the Lone Star Conference doubleheader against UT Permian Basin on Sunday, as junior Zach Boyett (Robinson, Texas) hurled seven scoreless innings to lead the visitors to a split at Roden Field.

The Javelinas (25-14, 9-6 LSC) took game one at 11-0, but fell victim to the Falcons (13-22, 4-7 LSC) at 14-8 in game two.

GAME ONE

The Hogs hit the ground running on the front end of the twin bill as redshirt senior Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) plated junior Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) on a single into left in the top of the first to start the scoring.

Redshirt senior Pablo Hernandez (Havana, Cuba) followed suit with a bounding-ball single into left with the bases loaded to bring sophomore Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) home, while freshman Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas) added an infield single to cap Loredo.

Consecutive free passes with the bags full issued to redshirt junior Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) and redshirt senior Alex Gonzalez (Corpus Christi, Texas) brought the next two runs in for TAMUK, while De Leon added a sacrifice fly to center that put the score at 6-0 heading into the second.

Both sides settled into a rhythm from that point as Boyett allowed only one Falcon runner to make it as far as third en route to the decision. He sat down nine on strikes over the course of the game, issued one walk and allowed only seven hits to take his fifth win of the season.

The Blue and Gold didn't find the plate again until the top of the fifth when Hernandez started the rally with an RBI single into left that plated junior Cameron Melcher (Kerrville, Texas).

Bonuz brought the next run home after he doubled and reached third on a UTPB miscue that allowed Hernandez to score all the way from first, while De Leon ensured the lead would reach double figures with a two-run jack to right later in the frame.

A bases-loaded walk given to redshirt senior Tim Gleinser (Victoria, Texas) provided the 11th run as Boyett struck out the last two batters of the game for an 11-0 final.
Hernandez, Bonuz and Servin all finished with two hits in the contest, while De Leon added three RBI to lead the way.

GAME TWO

TAMUK missed out on the sweep as UTPB returned the favor in the first inning on the back end with three runs. De Leon put the Hogs on the board in the top of the third as he lined a single into center to plate Ullman, but the Falcons tacked on three more in the bottom half of the frame on three singles for a 7-1 advantage.

The Javelinas whittled down the deficit to two by the top of the fifth as Hernandez and redshirt sophomore Will Arnold (Magnolia, Texas) skied back-to-back jacks in the fourth while Servin and Melcher added two more in the fifth on a single and double, respectively.

UTPB, however, built the lead to nine with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and a three-run home run from De Leon, his second round-tripper of the day, wasn't enough to ignite a rally as the hosts took game two at 14-8.

De Leon and Servin both finished with two hits in the second game of the day while the former led the Hogs yet again with four RBI.

Game four of the series will take place Monday, April 15, at Roden Field.
