PORTALES, N.M. - Putting together a complete performance on the field and at the plate, the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program used 16 hits on Friday Greyhound Baseball Field to come away with a 16-4 win in the series opener against Eastern New Mexico in a South Central Region matchup.
"Preston [Plovanich] did a great job of settling in today and allowing his hitters to constantly put pressure on their pitching staff," said head coach
Jason Gonzales, "and our bullpen did a great job to close it out as well."
The Javelinas (13-7) jumped on the Greyhound (8-9) for six runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to their third straight game totaling runs in the double digits in the final weekend of non-conference play.
Sophomore
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) started the early rally with a bounding-ball single back up the middle to plate junior
Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) with one out. De Leon opened the contest with a double to right field before making it to third on a ground out from the following at bat.
A double into the left center gap from redshirt senior
Pablo Hernandez (Havana, Cuba) pushed Servin home for the second run, while a miscue on an infield single from junior
Cameron Melcher (Kerrville, Texas) brought Hernandez home for a 3-0 Hog lead.
Redshirt junior
Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) kept the runs flowing after pushing a single back up the middle to cap Melcher, while two runs crossed on another bounding-ball single up the middle, this time from redshirt freshman
Rey Chapa (Spring, Texas), to set the score at 6-0 going into the bottom half of the frame.
ENMU got a run back in the home half of the opening inning as Malcolm Smith led the at bat off with a double down the right field line and scored on a TAMUK miscue.
Momentum clearly favored the visitors, however, as the Blue and Gold set the lead back at six in the top of the second after Melcher capped Hernandez on a liner into center. Hernandez reached on a two-out single to right and swiped second before coming home on Melcher's hit.
ENMU got its final three runs in the bottom of the third off a bases-clearing triple from Luidinson Hidalgo before TAMUK added two in the top of the fourth on an opposite-field double from redshirt senior
Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) to bring in Servin and junior
Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas).
Four runs came home for the Hogs in the top of the seventh as Spinn started the rally after dropping a single into left to give Chapa a window to score.
Spinn ended up pocketing second base during the next at bat and an errant throw down from Eurick Perez allowed him to get to third as De Leon went home. Spinn later scored on a groundout to the first baseman for a 12-4 Javelina lead.
The fourth run of the at bat came courtesy of a passed ball with runners at second and third, with senior
Dylan Hutcheson (Wichita Falls, Texas) providing the 13th run for the Blue and Gold going into the eighth inning.
Servin provided his third hit of the day to bring the first of three runs home in the eighth, while a two-run error from the Greyhounds cemented the score at 16-4.
Senior
Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) moved to 3-3 on the year after throwing six innings for the Hogs and coming away with four runs allowed, three earned, five hits and fourth strikeouts.
Freshman
Matthew Sesler (Harlingen, Texas) threw an unblemished seventh for TAMUK with a pair of punchouts, while classmate
Bryce Galvan (Blessing, Texas) closed the eighth after retiring two Greyhounds on strikes.
Servin and Hernandez both went 3-for-6 in the game at the plate, with three RBI and three runs coming from the former as the latter added one RBI and two runs.
Melcher and Chapa were the other two Javelinas posting multiple hits in the contest as each added two.
Saturday's doubleheader is set for a 2 p.m. CT first pitch in Portales, N.M., at the Greyhound Baseball Field.
