CLEBURNE, Texas - The [6/5] Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program took advantage of nine miscues courtesy of Oklahoma Christian on Friday at RailRoaders Stadium in Cleburne, Texas, and came away with a 10-5 win to start the second day of the Alpine Fresh 4-Him Classic.
The Javelinas (2-3) opened up the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second after redshirt freshman
Rey Chapa (Spring, Texas) started the rally with a bunt single with runners at second and third to bring home newcomer
Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas).
A sacrifice fly from redshirt junior
Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) provided the second run as senior
Donovan Lewis (Alvin, Texas) crossed the plate, while an Eagle (5-1) miscue allowed Chapa to score for the third run later in the frame.
Sophomore
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) added the final run for a 4-0 cushion with a bounding ball back up the middle to plate junior
Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) heading into the third.
OCU got on the board in the following at bat after Alex Garcia reached on a fielder's choice ground ball to short with the bases loaded to cap Errett Edwards. The Eagles added another run in the top of the fourth after Hunter Markwardt dropped a double into the gap to push Edwards home.
A two-run jack from redshirt senior
Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) to straightaway center field put the lead back to four in the bottom of the sixth, while Servin ended up stealing third and making it home on an errant throw from the catcher to give the Hogs a five-run advantage going into the seventh.
The Blue and Gold added their final three runs in the bottom of the eighth when De Leon reached on a fielder's choice error with runners at second and third, granting Serving access to the plate. An RBI single from Lewis pushed junior
Cameron Melcher (Kerrville, Texas) home while De Leon ended up scoring later in the stanza on a passed ball to give the Javelinas a 10-2 lead.
Meanwhile, senior
Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) worked through the first five innings with six strikeouts before giving way to redshirt junior
Alex Canul (Edinburg, Texas) in the top of the sixth.
Canul maneuvered through his first three innings of work with relative ease before he ran into trouble in the top of the ninth.
OCU added three runs after the first three batters reached safely to load the bases. Blake Empkey ended up crossing on a single through the left half of the diamond from Garrett Wages while Berry Hunt plated Garcia on a fielder's choice grounder back to Canul.
Kevin Collyar ended up scoring on a Javelna miscue before a groundball to Lewis at first brought the game to a close, handing Plovanich the win and Canul the save.
Loredo, Servin, De Leon and Lewis all finished with multiple hits in the contest, while Loredo was the only one to bat in multiple runs.
The Javelinas will face off against Oklahoma Baptist later in the day starting at 4 p.m. CT to close out the second day of the trip to Cleburne.
