HOUSTON - The [6/5] Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program held an 11-2 lead with 15 outs remaining in the contest against Arkansas Tech on Sunday at Minute Maid Park, but gave up 11 runs over two innings to leave the Houston Winter Invitational empty-handed at 13-11.
The Javelinas (0-3) found an offensive rhythm early in the matchup but couldn't shut the door on the Wonder Boys (2-1) as miscues on the mound resulted in an unfavorable outcome to close the road trip.
ATU struck first in the bottom of the second after Tristan Thomas pushed a double to center field to bring home Riley Hickerson.
TAMUK was quick to respond in the next at bat as redshirt senior
Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) brought junior
Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) home on a double to left center to even the count before junior
Cameron Melcher (Kerrville, Texas) put the Hogs ahead on the heels of a liner to straightaway center field.
The hosts ended up knotting the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third when Hickerson brought Dylan McDearmon home on a single to right, but the tie did not last long as the Blue and Gold exploded for five runs in the fourth.
The rally got started, simply enough, with a wild pitch that allowed senior
Dylan Hutcheson (Wichita Falls, Texas) to come home. Spinn brought two more home on a bounding-ball single up the middle, while Loredo pushed one down the right field lane to plate a pair for a 7-2 Javelina lead going into the bottom half of the stanza.
Redshirt junior
Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) padded the lead with his first home run shot of the year as he skied the third pitch of his at bat into the Crawford Boxes in left field for a 9-2 TAMUK lead, and helped get two more runs home in the top of the seventh with a single to center that allowed Melcher to score before Hutcheson crossed the plate on a miscue by Hickerson.
The 11-2 lead was short-lived, however, as the wheels came off starting in the home half of the seventh when McDearmon sent a double to center field to bring two runs home. ATU added two more followed a liner to right from Thomas before the fifth run of the frame ended up at home on a wild pitch, setting the line score at 11-7 favoring the Hogs.
The eighth inning was TAMUK's undoing, unfortunately, as six more runs came home for the Wonder Boys, all on pitching miscues. The first crossed on a bases-loaded walk as the second made it on a bases-loaded hit by pitch, while the third was plated on a balk.
The final three runs of the frame were a result of wild pitches as the Javelinas found themselves down 13-11 going into the top of the ninth.
The leadoff batter was able to get on base for TAMUK but never made it past first base as ATU took home the decision.
Loredo ended his day with three hits in four at bats to go with three RBI. Meanwhile, Melcher, Hutcheson and Ullman all tallied two hits in the loss.
Junior
Zach Boyett (Robinson, Texas) got the bill at the start of the game and ended with two punchouts in five innings of work.
The Javelinas will have a few days off to recuperate before returning to the diamond on Thursday, February 7, for the first game of the Alpine Fresh 4-Him Classic. TAMUK will face off against Newman with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. CT in Cleburne, Texas.
