Hogs claim Four-Game Sweep over Tritons

TAMUK piles on 17 runs in series finale against Missouri-St. Louis

KINGSVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program completed the first four-game sweep of 2019 courtesy of a 17-run outburst on Sunday at Nolan Ryan Field to run the winning streak to six games following the onslaught against Missouri-St. Louis.

"I told our guys they beat somebody they were more talented than," said head coach Jason Gonzales. "They did what they were supposed to do. I was proud of the way the pitchers attacked the strike zone and how the hitters stayed focused all weekend.

"From here on out it gets a lot tougher."

The Javelinas (9-4) wasted little time to get on the board as junior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) led off the bottom of the first with an infield single and made it to third courtesy of an errant throw across the diamond from the shortstop.

The error wouldn't have mattered in the long run as sophomore Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) ripped the 1-1 pitch from Nick Torres into the right center gap and ended up at third for his first triple of the season for a 1-0 Hog lead.

Servin came home on the following at bat after redshirt senior Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) skied a sacrifice fly to left to set the score at 2-0 heading into the second.

On the mound, the Javelinas opted for a pitcher-by-committee throughout the contest. Sophomore Tyler Flores (San Antonio, Texas) secured his first win of the year after lasting three innings on the mound with three strikeouts before handing the keys to redshirt junior Alex Canul (Edinburg, Texas) in the fourth.

Canul threw two scoreless innings with a pair of punchouts before redshirt-junior Braden Shields (Dripping Springs, Texas) took over in the sixth, while freshman Bryce Galvan (Blessing, Texas) closed the game with a perfect seventh.

At the plate, TAMUK tacked on one more run in the third after freshman Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas) came home on a balk, while five runs punctuated the fifth to blow the game wide open.

The first four Hogs that came to the plate in the frame all reached safely, either by way of the free pass or with a single into left field. Loredo came home on a Bonuz liner into left before the latter was plated on a bounding-ball single between the shortstop and third baseman from redshirt senior Pablo Hernandez (Havana, Cuba) for a 5-0 lead.

Junior Cameron Melcher (Kerrville, Texas) ended up crossing home on an RBI groundball from redshirt-sophomore Hayden Fails (Sweeny, Texas) later in the at bat, while a sacrifice fly redshirt junior Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) to the second baseman in shallow right field was deep enough to allow Hernandez to score.

The fifth run of the stanza came home after Servin roped a liner to right to push redshirt freshman Rey Chapa (Spring, Texas) across to have the Javelinas sitting comfortably at 8-0 going into the sixth.

Another nine runs, all unearned, were poured on in the sixth for the Hogs as redshirt sophomore Will Arnold (Magnolia, Texas) started the inning off by reaching on a throwing error following his grounder to the second baseman. Arnold later scored on a sacrifice fly to center with one out and the bases loaded.

Another run came home after senior Dylan Hutcheson (Wichita Falls, Texas) was plunked with the bases loaded, while the next six runs were courtesy of base hits back up the middle of the field.

Servin brought two home on a bounding-ball up the gut, while junior Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) added one more on a near-identical base hit that bounced into center field.

Redshirt freshman Matthew Stary (Houston, Texas) added two more when he took the easier route as he lined the first pitch he saw into straightaway center field, while the final two runs came home on a pair of wild pitches for a 17-0 line score.

The seventh inning came and went as the Tritons were sat down in order as Galvan posted the final out on strikes to secure the series sweep. TAMUK had three such sweeps in 2018 with the last coming against Cameron at home in Lone Star Conference play leading into the postseason.

The Javelinas will take the upcoming week off before returning to action on Tuesday, March 5, against regional foe St. Edward's at Nolan Ryan Field, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
