KINGSVILLE, Texas – Unable to recapture the magic that carried the team to a win over the second-ranked squad in the nation only two days earlier, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program suffered a 76-53 defeat on Saturday at the Steinke Physical Education Center in a Lone Star Conference matchup to Eastern New Mexico to wrap up the weekend at home.
"I thought they came in here and wanted it more than we did," said head coach
Wade Scott. "I think we got outplayed, they were more physical than we were, they were the more aggressive team and it showed on the scoreboard."
The Javelinas (5-8, 2-4 LSC) fell behind in the second quarter before the Greyhounds (10-4, 5-1 LSC) cruised to the decision. Junior
Brynae Thompson (Houston, Texas) lead the Blue and Gold with 17 points on a .400 clip, while classmate
Rachel Tapps (Cypress Ranch, Texas) came away with her second straight double-digit scoring output with 12.
Both sides were evenly matched through most of the first quarter. The visitors held the advantage on the rebounds while the hosts gained ground on forced turnovers that led up to an 11-11 knot with 3:51 on the clock following a free throw from Tapps.
ENMU took a 14-12 lead going into the second before opening the floodgates halfway through the frame. TAMUK stayed within one possession after Thompson drained a trey at the 5:31 mark for a 21-18 deficit, but the Greyhounds methodically built the lead to double digits following a 12-1 run over the next three minutes for a 32-19 advantage with 2:43 to play in the half.
A handful of free throws became the final points of the second quarter for the Javelinas, with two courtesy of senior
Cloe Lane (Kansas City, Mo.) alongside one each from sophomore
Ravae Payne (Pearland, Texas) and redshirt freshman
Bri-Anna Soliz (San Angelo, Texas). Meanwhile, the visitors added three-ball from Tilasha Okey to set the score at 35-21 going into the locker rooms.
The Javelinas were unable to close within single digits after that as they were matched by the Greyhounds through the majority of the third quarter. TAMUK kept the deficit between 12 and 14 points up until the 1:55 mark before a pair of long-range shots from Treyanna Clay put the Blue and Gold down 18 heading into the fourth at 57-39.
The Greyhounds kept the lead well out of reach throughout the remainder of the game en route to the 76-53 final.
Thompson added three rebounds to her 17 points. Tapps matched her output with three to go with one assist.
Lane and Soliz each finished with nine points on the game as Lane added five steals and four rebounds alongside Soliz's six rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist.
The Javelinas head out on the road next week to take on Western New Mexico in Silver City, N.M., on Thursday, January 17.
